Most Bible scholars agree that there was a dangerous heresy which had begun to surface in the Colossians church which had been reported by Epaphras to Paul, and was thus the reason for Paul writing this epistle.  Though Paul had not ever visited Colossae that we know of, yet as the apostle to the Gentiles he was nevertheless concerned about them, and no doubt felt a certain responsibility for them. The Ministry of Reconciliation, Colossians 1:19-23

The model for the church, Romans 15:14-21

The edification of the church, Romans 14:13-23
