In our study in the book of Hebrews, we have learned much doctrine regarding who Christ is, and what He has accomplished on our behalf.  Now there is a switch of emphasis in the book, and from this point on the emphasis is not primarily doctrine, but application.  And so in this passage we are considering certain duties and responsibilities we have as Christians.  It’s not enough to believe in facts about Christ, but we are exhorted to act in response to them.  Faith requires both the acceptance of facts, and the application of faith.   In the next chapter,

So far in Hebrews we have been learning the doctrines of our salvation through Jesus Christ. Hebrews, as I have said repeatedly, is actually one long sermon.  I’m not sure if it was originally delivered in one sitting or not.   In the book of Romans, chapter 2, Paul says that Gentiles, who did not know the law, were none the less guided by their consciences, showing the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them. Last week i told a story about a Porsche 911 that I had my eye on. And that story was intended to illustrate a truth about Biblical faith, as opposed to name it and claim it faith.
