True disciples versus false disciples, John 7:1-18

Though millions of people today claim to believe in Jesus, who are attracted to Jesus, yet Jesus Himself said that many are called but few are chosen, that many will seek to enter His kingdom but will not be able. Though many claim to be Christians, there is a tremendous difference between true and false disciples.  Two thousand years ago, even Jesus’ own family did not believe in Him and his own nation rejected Him and put Him to  death.  Even after feeding 15000 people and healing many of the sick in attendance, when He began to preach His gospel many of His disciples stopped following Him. John 6:66 says,“As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.”

Those fair weather disciples who came for the miracles but left after the message were obviously superficial. They were disciples or followers in name only.  There were still the 12 however.  Christ’s inner circle.  And when the others left Him, Jesus turned to them and said, “You do not want to go away also, do you?”  Peter, acting as spokesman answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”  But even within the 12, Jesus said that one of them had a devil and would betray Him. 

So Jesus ministry was characterized by true and false disciples.  I believe much of Jesus’ teaching was to show a distinction between His followers, to separate those that followed Him for superficial reasons, and to develop true discipleship. Jesus seems to almost go out of HIs way to talk people out of following Him.  Let me give you just a few examples.  

To the 15000 people that had eaten the loaves and fishes that He had miraculously provided, Jesus said that they had to eat His flesh and drink His blood. At another time Jesus told those who wished to follow Him to let the dead bury the dead, and not even go to their father’s funeral.  He told a rich young ruler to sell everything he had and give it to the poor and then to follow Him. At another time He told a crowd that unless they hated their father and mother and family, and even one’s own life, they could not be His disciple.  Then He told them to pick up their cross and follow Him. He said in Luke 14:33  “So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.” Jesus told others to leave their nets, their professions as fishermen, and He would make them fishers of men. 

I could go on and on. Jesus called disciples to abandon all that they held dear in the world for the sake of knowing Him.   I’m sure most of us would have responded to this call for drastic abandonment  with the response; “you lost me at hello.”  Unfortunately, this call to forsake all for Christ is not the gospel message of the modern church today.  We have changed the message to be as accommodating and appealing as possible.  We don’t ask for anyone to leave anything, but to come as you are.  We don’t ask for any sort of personal sacrifice; but say all God wants is a relationship with you because He loves you so much.  

If we are not careful, we find that we have redefined discipleship, if not even salvation.  We are guilty of twisting the Jesus of the Bible into a 21st century hipster Christ that people are more comfortable with.  Jesus becomes a non-condemning, non-controversial genie who is able to grant wishes upon our command and more importantly, places no demands upon us.  

But that is not the Jesus of the Bible. Jesus never presented discipleship as being easy.  The Jesus of the Bible talked about offering Himself as a human sacrifice for sin, and man’s need to repent for the forgiveness of their sins, and the people rejected Him.  When He condemned religious leaders of His day as hypocrites, in response they hated Him and plotted to kill Him.  So it says in 7:1 that Jesus avoided going to Judea, which was the seat of religious authority in Israel, because He knew that they wanted Him dead.  

His home by the way was in a small city called Capernaum, in Galilee, which had a population of about 1500 people.  We can assume that  it was the family home.  And so about six months after the feeding of the multitudes on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, His brothers come to Him and said, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”

From a logical perspective, what they said seemed to make sense.  It seemed to be good advice for how to raise up a ministry, or in Jesus’ case, how to get everyone to believe that you are the Messiah. But their motive was not really in the best interests of the kingdom of God.  The underlying motivation for their comments is found in vs.5, “For not even His brothers were believing in Him.” So at this point,  even His own brothers were not true disciples.  They were perhaps willing to benefit from their relationship with Him if in fact He could pull off some sort of coup in the geopolitical realm.  But in fact they did not really believe that their own brother was the Messiah, much less the Son of God.

In chapter 6, you will remember, the crowds were taken back by Jesus claiming to have come down out of heaven, and they said in vs. 42, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”  And now in chapter 7, you have His brother’s agreeing with the crowd.  After all, they had grown up in the same house with Him.  They shared the same parents, or so they thought.  How could He have come down from heaven? 

Matthew’s gospel identifies His brothers. Matt. 13:54-58 “He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”  And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household. And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.”

So from that text we know that the people in Jesus’ hometown didn’t believe He was the Messiah. And in John 7 we learn that even His brothers didn’t believe in Him.  That explains why they say, “IF you do these things show them to the world.”  They didn’t even believe that He had done any real miracles. 

There is a parallel here in the life of Joseph from the Old Testament.  Joseph was hated by his brothers, because they were jealous of him.  And so they scorned him and eventually plotted for his death.  Jesus’ brothers did not actually kill him, but they did reject Him and really wanted Him to get out of their lives.  He was an irratation to them.  And in like manner, Jesus’ greater brethren, meaning the family of the Jewish nation plotted His death.

But the Bible does indicate that Jesus’ actual brothers did eventually come to believe in Him, even as Joseph’s brothers eventually came to bow down before him.  But it was not until after Christ’s resurrection according to Acts 1:14.  Tradition tells us that Simon became a servant of the church for many years.  And James became the author of the book of James, the leader of the church in Jerusalem, and a martyr for the faith.  He describes himself in his epistle as “James a servant of God and the Lord Jesus Christ,” establishing Jesus as Lord, Messiah and equal with God.  Jude, the author of the book of Jude, describes himself also as a servant of Jesus Christ. And he writes about looking for the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ for eternal life.  So His brothers eventually come to recognize Him as the Son of God, but at this stage they are filled with contempt and scorn for Him. Though they could claim to have a relationship with Him, yet they could not claim true discipleship.

Their suggestions are indicative of false disciples as well.  They basically are espousing the dogma of modern Christian evangelism; that if you are successful, if you have a big crowd, then you must be doing something right.  That’s why they wanted Him to go to Judea.  Why hide out in the backwoods of Galilee when the big crowds and the success was in Judea. If you’re really the Messiah you are going to have to become popular with the multitudes and accepted by everyone. But notice that’s not Jesus’ plan for taking over the world.  In chapter 6 Jesus spent about 2 days teaching the 15000 people.  But many of them deserted Him afterwards when they found out the cost of discipleship.  So for the next 6 months Jesus spent all His time primarily with just 12 guys – discipling them.  That was His plan for establishing the kingdom of God in the world.

Jesus’ commission is the same for us today; Matt. 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” The command is not go into football stadiums and attract a huge crowd.  Nor to organize giant crusades and get a lot of people to walk the aisle and repeat a prayer.  But to make disciples, and teach them, notice that, teach them, to observe all that I commanded you.  Attracting a crowd is easy if you have enough money.  But making disciples is hard work.  It takes time.  It’s not done in a single outreach.  It’s not done in a short term mission trip.  It’s a long term affair. It’s teaching disciples to be doers of the word and not just hearers, not just superficial disciples.

Now the reason for His brother’s suggestion to go to Judea is because it was the time of the Feast of  booths, or feast of tabernacles.  There were three feasts which Jewish men were required to go to Jerusalem to celebrate.  The feast of tabernacles was one of those feasts, which lasted 7 days.  From a human perspective, it would have been a great opportunity for Jesus to appear before every able bodied man in Israel and start doing some miracles and show everyone that He was indeed the Messiah.  

That’s another indication of false disciples, by the way.  They are attracted by signs and wonders.  Great crusades happen in our country all the time which claim to be visited by signs and wonders.  One happened a few years ago in Los Angeles, the city of the angels.  And one of the organizers of that event claimed to see a giant golden angel up in the sky above the stadium as he was driving in on the freeway.  Their whole program was about signs and wonders.  One speaker proclaimed that everyone there was going to be able to walk behind someone afterwards and know everything about that person.  I guess that is what they consider a word of knowledge.  There were people who were acting “drunk in spirit” all over the auditorium, falling down and laughing uncontrollably.  

But the Bible warns about such signs and wonders as a means of leading people into a false discipleship.  Matt. 24:24 says, “For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.”  Jesus rebuked others who followed Him for seeking signs and wonders in John 4:48  Jesus said, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe.”  And Paul warned in 2 Thess. 2:9 about “the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved.”

Jesus is not interested in accommodating man’s agenda, even if it’s His own family members who are pushing it.  So He responds, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”

There are a couple of points that need to be made concerning this important statement.  First of all, God has His own timetable and agenda, and we need to be aligned with it, rather than trying to get God to accommodate ours.  Jesus had an appointed time that He was going to go into Jerusalem and present Himself as the Messiah.  It would be 6 months later at the Passover Feast.  At that time, Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey and the crowds celebrate His coming as the Messiah, the son of David.  A week later, He is crucified as the lamb slain for the salvation of the world.  That is the timing of God, and Jesus is in full agreement with that plan.  This was the plan of God before the foundation of the world.  And though it doesn’t look like it to His brothers or His disciples, all is going according to God’s plan.

Listen, I’ve said before that there is no safer place to be than in the will of God, and there is no safe place outside of the will of God.  It should be a great comfort to us to know that we are in the will of God, so that even when it seems like everything is going wrong, we can trust that God is in control, and He has a plan and things are going according to His plan.  If you are going to be a disciple of Christ, then you have to get in tune with the timing of God, and then trust in His sovereignty to accomplish His will in HIs time.  All our anxiety is usually because we have a different timetable and different expectations than God has.

Trusting God is hard work. Faith is hard work. The idea that faith is easy is contrary to scripture. It’s hard to walk by faith and not by sight.  I heard a story that illustrates trust.  It’s setting is back in the day when televisions still required antennas on rooftops.  Something that has gone by the wayside in the digital age.  But this man was up on his roof fixing his television antenna when he slipped and began to slide down toward the gutters. He tried to catch himself, but he went over the edge. He managed to grab hold of the rain gutter as he dropped, and he hung there, suspended two stories in the air. He didn’t want to look down, and in his desperation he cried out. “Oh, God help me!” And a voice replied, “I am ready to help you.” And he said, “Tell me what to do.” The voice asked. “Do you trust me?” He said, “Yes, I trust you.” The voice said. “All right then. Let go.” And the man asked, “Is there anybody else up there who can help me?”  Trusting God isn’t always easy.  Letting go of things we depend upon though is fundamental to really trusting in God.

Secondly, if you are on God’s timetable, doing God’s will, then you are in opposition to the world, and the world is going to hate you.  True disciples are hated by the world.  But contrarily, false disciples love the world, and so the world does not hate them.  Now why is this true?  Well, because if you are a true disciple, then you are in agreement with what Jesus said, “it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.”  That’s it.  We call sin, evil.  And we testify that their deeds are evil.  

Let me tell you something that you need to really understand.  This is the defining point of true disciples versus false disciples.  The defining point between true and false disciples is their deeds.  Don’t get me wrong.  You are not saved by works, you are saved by grace.  But don’t get Jesus wrong either.  He said, you shall know them by their fruits.  The most damning statement of Jesus was toward false disciples, found in Matthew 7:20-23  “So then, you will know them by their fruits. Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’”  

So their fruits are the deeds that they did.  But notice that they did signs and wonders.  They even cast out demons and performed many miracles.  They named the name of Jesus.  And yet they were not true disciples because they practiced sin.

Now that is exactly what Jesus accused the Jews of in vs.19.  He said to them,  “Did not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you seek to kill Me?” They claimed the righteousness of the law, but they did not carry out the law.  They sought to kill Him, in opposition to the law.

Their hatred of Jesus was equal to murder, and so it beget a plot to murder Him, which was eventually fulfilled.  So if you are a true disciple of Christ, then the world will hate you.  That really is the irony of the seeker friendly church model, isn’t it?  That we would try  to ingratiate ourselves to those who really hate what we stand for.  Because what we stand for is the truth of God’s Word which declares sin as evil, and defines it by God’s law.

So Jesus did eventually go up to the Feast of Tabernacles, but secretly.  That means that He did not enter into Jerusalem with a big fanfare.  His family would have been part of a large caravan, and His coming would have been with thousands of pilgrims, which would have probably instigated some sort of great political, religious rally to make Him King.  But He was not interested in their agenda, He was interested in fulfilling God’s agenda. So He shows up midweek, without fanfare, and when they find Him, He is teaching in the temple.

But notice that there was grumbling going on amongst the people concerning Him.  Vs.12, ‘There was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; some were saying, “He is a good man’; others were saying, ‘No, on the contrary, He leads the people astray.’ Yet no one was speaking openly of Him for fear of the Jews.”

Notice that neither of those comments are the marks of true disciples.  Jesus was not just a good man.  Either He was God incarnate, or He was a lunatic.  Most of the world’s false religions say that Jesus was a good man.  But they fail to believe that He is God.  That He is alive, having risen from the dead and ascended into heaven.  And as such their belief is of no avail.  Believing that Jesus is a good man will not save you.  Of course, the other half of the people were under the influence of the religious leaders who were saying that He was a deceiver.  But neither group were professing saving faith, and neither group spoke openly about Him for fear of the Jews.  That word Jews is used of the religious Jewish leaders.  They feared being ostracized, or kicked out of the temple because of any allegiance to Christ.  

I believe the day is already here when being a true disciple of Christ will bring persecution in the social arena, when saying that certain deeds are sinful will cost you your job, or mean you are sued for everything you have and then some, or even thrown in jail.  That day is here.

So Jesus starts teaching in the temple.  And the Jews hearing Him, ask in astonishment, “How has this man become learned, having never been educated?”  This is the great thing about preaching the Word of God.  It’s the wisdom of God. The Holy Spirit working in us, in conjunction with the Word of God, teaches us the things of God, so that we have the wisdom of God.  You want wisdom?  Read the Word of God.  1Cor. 1:25 says, “the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

Notice Jesus says in John 7:16-17 “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me.  If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know of the teaching, whether it is of God or whether I speak from Myself.”  Jesus spoke the words of God.  When He rebuked the devil in the wilderness, He quoted from the Word of God.  This is the habit of Jesus when He preached.  And in the same manner I believe it’s a good idea for preachers to preach the Word of God.  Jesus goes on to say, “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.”  We have a lot of glory seeking preachers out there today who speak in order to glorify themselves.  They speak to gain a crowd, to please people, to entertain people.  And they fail to preach the full counsel of God.  Jesus testified that people’s sin was evil.  He preached the Word of God in it’s fullness.  Only when man is convinced of His sin does he come to know his need for a Savior.  And only when man has come to know Jesus as His Savior will he come to serve Jesus as Lord.

But here is the key Jesus gives us in those passages regarding true discipleship.  He says, “If anyone is willing to do His will, that is the Father’s will, he will recognize the teaching is of God.”  (my paraphrase) Here is the key to true discipleship.  You first have to come to a point of being willing to submit and obey the will of God, and when you do that, when you obey, then God will reveal more truth to you.  This is the principle I have mentioned so many times, that of progressive revelation.  When you are obedient to the light God has shown you thus far, then He will reveal more to you.  God’s word is a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.  That means it’s walking revelation.  As you walk out the truth in obedience, God will continue to lead you.  Too many people want to see the light at the end of the tunnel before they start to walk.  That’s not discipleship.  Believe and obey.  Trust and obey, for there’s no other way. 

Well, there is more to this message that Jesus gives during the Feast, but it will have to wait for next Sunday.  In the meantime, I believe that you have been given enough light to start to be obedient to the light you have.  I hope that you will prove to be a disciple this week by your deeds and not just your claims on Christianity.  I hope that you are indeed a true disciple.  If not, then today is the appointed day of salvation.  Salvation is simply believing all that Jesus claimed He was, that He was the bread of life which came down out of heaven, that men might eat of Him and receive eternal life.  To eat of Him is to receive Him, as Savior and Lord.  To be willing to forsake the world, even all that life offers, in exchange for eternal life.  To be willing to take up your cross and follow Him.  True discipleship is not without a cost.  But the reward is worth it all. As Jesus said later in this sermon, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”

I AM the bread of life, John 6:41-71

We are considering today one of the great sermons of Christ. This message marks a turning point in the ministry of Jesus.  It reveals the moment when the multitudes that initially followed Him in response to His miracles, turned away and rejected Him when confronted with the truth of the gospel. Jesus was speaking to a large group of disciples, or followers, which included the twelve.  As verse 66 indicates, there were a large number of superficial disciples there, as well as His inner circle.  We know from studying the gospels that in most cases Jesus taught by using parables or metaphors, to illustrate spiritual principles.  For purposes known only to God, He said in Matt.11:25 that He spoke in such a way as to hide things from the wise and reveal things to infants.  And He does so in this sermon as well, especially by using the metaphor of the bread of heaven. 

So as we consider this sermon of Christ, we are going to break it down into 6 courses, in hope of helping us to better digest it.  We will look at the picture that Christ presents, the provision of God, the predicament of the people, the principle of salvation, the proposal to believe, and the profession of faith.  That’s our outline of Jesus’ sermon.

First then, notice the picture that Christ presents. Before we can go too far in the text we must recognize that Jesus is speaking metaphorically.  He is using a picture from the physical realm to illustrate a spiritual principle.  He did that also when He healed.  It was not simply to provide  physical healing, but to illustrate a spiritual principle.  So when He says He is the bread of life, we must understand that He is speaking metaphorically.  He obviously did not look like bread, His body was not actually made up of bread, and people were not being told to physically eat His body.  You would think it would be unnecessary to have to say that, but unfortunately, there are those who have misapplied certain verses in this passage as a result of a misunderstanding of the nature of a metaphor.

In this message is the first of seven “I AM” statements of Jesus given to us in the book of John.  The purpose of course is to identify Christ as the Lord who appeared to Moses in the burning bush in Exodus 3:14, when the Lord answered Moses’ question of what is His name by saying “I AM Who I AM.”  There are seven of these I AM statements in the gospel of John, this being the first in vs.35, “I am the bread of life.” Then in John 8:12 Jesus said, “I am the light of the world.”  In John 10:9, “I am the door.”  In John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd.”  In John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life.” John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”  And 7, in John 15:1, “I am the true vine.” 

Now in all those I AM statements Jesus uses metaphors to illustrate His divine character and purpose.  He was not literally a door, He was not literally a vine, not physically a light.  He is speaking metaphorically in all of these statements.  To say that He is bread is to use what is called a metonym for food, bread being the staple of man’s diet, which sustains life. Jesus is basically saying that I am the spiritual bread that gives spiritual life, which sustains all life.  

But the people continually seem to misunderstand  what He is saying.  The day before they had eaten bread that He manufactured out of His hands at the feeding of the 5000, and as a result they can’t seem to get beyond  physical bread. In fact, back in the 31st verse, we see them speaking of the manna, or bread, from heaven which Moses had given them for 40 years in the wilderness. In the same manner, they wanted Jesus to give them bread which they could eat for physical nourishment. We need to be careful we don’t make the same mistake and misunderstand the spiritual principle which was being taught.  We need to understand the picture that Christ presents; Christ is the bread which comes down from heaven, in that He is the source and sustainer of spiritual life which is given for men.  

Next, let’s look at the provision of God. Jesus is the bread of life which came down out of heaven. He came to be broken for man.  Notice how many times Jesus states this in His sermon.  He starts by clarifying  their comment regarding manna in vs. 32; “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.”  But they still don’t get it.  So He continues to stress that He is the bread of life which has come down out of heaven.  Verse 38, “I have come down from heaven.” Verse 46, He says, “Not that anyone has seen the Father except the One who is from God.”  He is saying He has come from heaven.  Verse 50, “This is the bread which comes down out of heaven.”  Verse 51, “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven.”  Verse 58, “This is the bread which came down out of heaven.”  

The bread of heaven then is is the provision of God. God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, the bread of heaven, to the world, so that the world might have life by receiving Jesus.  Jesus is emphasizing what John said in his opening remarks in chapter one, that the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and in Him was life.  The plan of God from before creation was to select a people from the face of the earth to be HIs bride, and in order to accomplish that, it was determined through the foreknowledge of God to send Jesus from heaven to man, to offer Himself as an atonement for their sins, that they might be joined to God.  

So in the provision of God, the disciples were challenged to believe in the preexistence of Christ, having been in heaven, being One with God, and now coming down out of heaven to mankind.  And we also see the purpose of God, in sending Christ to be the provision by which man is reconciled to God. 

Notice the purpose of God in verse 32, “It is my Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven.”  Verse 33, “The bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven.”  Verse 38, “I have come down from heaven not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”  Verse 39, “This is the will of Him who sent Me.”  Verse 40, “This is the will of My Father.”  And again in verse 57, “As the living Father sent Me.”  So you have here divine preexistence and divine purpose.  The Father sending the Son and the Son’s obedience to the predetermined will of God.

Then there is the predicament of the people.  This is really a two fold problem.  The first predicament is that they cannot understand how Jesus can say that He has come down out of heaven.  After all, they say in vs.42, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’?”  Don’t forget that Jesus had grown up in this area.  Most of those people came from small villages, and so they would have known Him, seen Him grow up, known His brothers and His family members.  Remember we said that at the wedding in Cana it was probable that one of Jesus’ family was married there that day.  So He was already known prior to His ministry, and now to suddenly declare Himself to be  the Messiah, the Savior of the world, to have come down from heaven, to have seen God, and to be sent from God, would have been a pretty big stretch for their imaginations.  It wasn’t a logical conclusion for those people, in spite of all that Jesus had done.  

So how did Jesus answer that criticism?  Why not perform some undeniable sign? Why not call down fire from heaven?  That would probably at least scare them into obeisance.  Instead, Jesus tells them to stop grumbling.   Notice He says do not grumble among yourselves.  But who are they grumbling against?  I would suggest that it is Jesus they are grumbling against.  I think in effect they are saying, “Who does He think He is?  He puts His pants on the same way we do.  We know where He is from.  We know HIs family.  He is not better than we are.”  Right there, even before they walk away at the difficult statement about eating and drinking His blood they are already turning on Him.

So Jesus says, ““No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘AND THEY SHALL ALL BE TAUGHT OF GOD.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.”  Now a lot of preachers want to get off the train right there and preach a series of messages on election.  And I could do that as well.  But Jesus is not necessarily presenting a side message here about predestination.  What He is doing is deflecting their criticism.  He is saying in effect; you cannot believe Me because you have not been taught of God about Me.  You don’t know what the Father has said about Me, and so you cannot come to Me. That’s a backhanded rebuke right there.  Because they thought they knew about God.  They thought they knew what the scriptures said about the Messiah.  But Jesus is saying they are ignorant of both.

I find that true today.  People think that they know about God.  They think that they know about Christianity.  But the truth is they have created a god out of their own imagination, which is subservient to what they think God should be like. They’ve substituted a different gospel according to their desires. And when a preacher such as I challenge those assumptions that they hold so dear, I become the object of their grumbling.  Their criticisms.  But as Jesus said, a servant is not greater than his master.  If Jesus suffered that criticism, then so will I.

The other predicament of the people is found in vs.52.  Their predicament is characterized by grumbling and now by arguing. “Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying, ‘How can this man give us His flesh to eat?’” Now here is what Jesus had said which prompted this debate.  He said “I am the bread of life, I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”  And so their question is based in a literal interpretation of Christ’s words.  “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?” 

Notice how Jesus emphasizes this truth over and over again.  Verse 53, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourself.”  Vs.54, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life.”  Vs. 55, “For My flesh is true food and My blood is true drink.”  Vs. 56, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me in and I in him.”  

Now it’s apparent that the Jews stumbled over this saying.  From the perspective of the law, what Christ was asking them to do, even if it were possible, was reprehensible.  It was against the law.  What they were arguing about then is the same thing we might argue about.  In fact, I would suggest that the church has been arguing about the correct interpretation of this since the Middle Ages.  One of the main arguments of the Reformation was against the doctrine of transubstantiation which was and is practiced by the Catholic church, in which they believe the elements of communion literally become His flesh and blood, and by eating it, you receive remission of sin.  However, I don’t believe that this is a statement about communion, but it has been incorrectly interpreted that way for centuries, and consequently has given rise to the view  that when you eat the bread and drinking the wine of communion, you are actually eating the flesh and drinking the blood of Jesus Christ.  

But my answer to that is to remind you of my first point; the metaphor of bread is the means by which Jesus  illustrates Himself as being offered by God to man to give life to the world.  It is a picture, a symbol, the same as the door, the vine, or the light was a symbol.  But the Jews miss the symbolism and are fixated on the literal, physical bread and blood, and consequently miss the truth in what Jesus is saying. And in like manner, those who misconstrue the physical eating and drinking as a means of the remission of sins are in error as well. So after hearing Jesus present the sermon, the people say, “This is a difficult statement; who can listen to it?”

And that leads us to the principle of salvation which Christ is declaring. Vs.61 But Jesus, conscious that His disciples grumbled at this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?” Notice that the disciples are still grumbling.  They are grumbling at the dual predicament that Jesus has generated by His message.  And so Jesus answers the first predicament, the one of His coming down from heaven, of His preexistence. He says in vs. 62, “What then if you see the Son of Man ascending to where He was before?”  He is saying, “Look guys, you have a problem with Me saying that I came down from heaven?  What are you going to do when you see Me going back up into heaven? Is that going to be a problem for you too?”  Of course, Jesus knew that He was going to ascend again into heaven after His resurrection.  The problem for those that rejected Him now would be that they would not be there to witness the ascension.  That speaks to the progressive nature of revelation, by the way.  To those that are obedient to the light that they have, God will give more light.  But if you reject the light God has given you, then you will not receive more.  God gives progressive revelation to those that are obedient, as they are being obedient.  What God had revealed to these disciples up to this point should have been enough to believe.  But since they don’t believe HIs words, and the signs which accompanied His message, they would not be given more.  

The answer to the second part of the predicament, that of eating flesh and blood is found in the next verse, 63: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” This verse is the key to understanding the symbolism of what Jesus was preaching.  Eating bread, even eating His flesh, profits nothing.  He isn’t speaking of eating literal flesh and drinking literal blood.  That has no benefit whatsoever.  Rather, it is the Spirit who gives life.  If you want spiritual life, then it must come from the Spirit of God.  It cannot come from physical things, it cannot come from physical effort, but it must come from the Spirit of God.  So obviously what Jesus is offering is not to eat of His physical flesh or to drink His literal blood, but spiritual life through the Spirit of God.

And what does that Spirit filled life look like?  Is it getting goosebumps and chills?  It is characterized by animal sounds, or speaking in tongues, or writhing in convulsions?  What constitutes the Spirit given life?  Listen to this: “the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”  Man!  I hope you get that folks.  I hope you are not duped into thinking that the Holy Spirit gives life through physical convulsions or expressions.  But the word of God is Spirit and life.  That principle is stated by Paul to Timothy in 2 Tim. 3:14-17 “You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them,  and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.  All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;  so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”  The word is life from God, the scriptures are God breathed, able to produce salvation which is spiritual life, and able to sustain that life by training us in righteousness, so that we might be equipped to live as God would have us live.  The word life there which Jesus uses is zoe in the Greek, not bios, which means organic life, but zoe which refers to the vitality of the soul, an abundant life in the spirit. So that is the principle of salvation: the Spirit gives life, and the words of Christ are spirit and they are life. 

Now then the fifth course; the proposal to believe. There are multiple aspects of what it means to believe in Christ. First in verse 35, He says, “I am the bread of life.  He who comes to Me…” Listen, don’t get so hung up on the election of God that you neglect your responsibility in the matter. I don’t think we can fully understand the predestination and election of God.  That doesn’t mean we don’t accept it, it just means it’s above our pay grade.  But what we should understand is our responsibility.  So the first requirement is to come.  Verse 37 joins those two principles together saying, “All that the Father gives Me will come, and the one who comes to me, I will not reject.” So you don’t have to worry about whether or not you were elected for salvation.  If you come to Christ, He will not reject you. Period. Let God worry about God’s responsibility of divine appointment, and you just worry about your responsibility.  Come to Jesus. That is the invitation of Christ.  Come to Me.  All come.  The invitation is open to all who hear.

The second aspect of believing is to look.  Notice verse 40, “This is the will of My Father that everyone who beholds the Son…” Notice the word “everyone.”  There aren’t limitations here based upon our understanding of the doctrine of election.  All who come,  anyone who comes, I will not reject.  Everyone who beholds. He’s not talking about a cursory glance. I really think it’s similar to the idea found in Hebrews 12:2, “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith.”  The word behold in the Greek means to look at intently, to examine, to study, to gaze on. Jesus is saying, look closely at Me.  Examine Me in the light of the scriptures.  He can accept that kind of scrutiny, in fact He desires it, because He knows it will produce faith in Him.

There’s another phrase that’s really critical as well.  Look at verse 35, “I am the bread of life.  He who comes to Me will not hunger and he who believes in Me…”  He who believes in Me.  Verse 40, “This is the will of my Father that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life.”  Verse 47, “I say to you, he who believes has eternal life.”  John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 20:31 says the same thing. The theme verse for the whole gospel of John, “These things are written that you may know that Jesus is the Christ, that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and believing have life in His name.”  Salvation is about believing.   Another way to understand it would be John 1:12, “As many as received Him.”  You have to come.  You have to look.  You have to be exposed to the truth, but you must believe. 

Going back to the metaphor of the bread, go to verse 50, and from verse 50 on is really the proposal to believe unto salvation from Jesus. “This is the bread which comes down out of heaven so that one may eat,”   Believing is eating.  Taking in, receiving, appropriating.  Verse 51, “I am the living bread that came down out of heaven.  If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.”  Verse 57, “As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.”  Again, verse 58, the end of the verse, “He who eats this bread will live forever.”  Eating the bread is a powerful metaphor that everyone should understand as believing or receiving who Jesus is and what He came to do.  You have to receive the truth about Christ.  It’s not enough to just believe He existed.  It’s not enough to just come to church  and listen.  You have to eat.  You have to appropriate. That’s what it means to believe.  You have to receive Christ as your Lord and Savior.  That’s our responsibility.

You not only have to believe in Him as living bread, you have to believe in Him as dying, which is represented by blood.  Verse 51, “I am the living bread.  I came down out of heaven.  If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever.  And the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh.”  There He’s talking about giving up His life so that we might have life. But listen to what He says in verse 53, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourself.”  54, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life.”  Verse 55, “For My flesh is true food and My blood is true drink.”  Verse 56, “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me in and I in him.” 

Blood is simply a metonym for His death, as it is throughout the New Testament. You must believe in Jesus as the preexistent Son of God who came into the world and is the source of spiritual life, eternal life, and you must believe in His sacrificial death in order to be saved.  As bread, He gives life.  As blood, He cleanses us from all unrighteousness.  Blood, then, speaks of His death by which He makes a sacrifice for our sin.  

That brings us to the last point, the profession of faith. When the disciples hear the words that Jesus says, they do not accept it.  They say this is too difficult for us to accept. Vs.66, “As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him anymore.” So Jesus turns to the 12 and says, “You do not want to go away also, do you?” And Simon Peter, speaking on behalf of the 12 gives the quintessential profession of faith in vs.68, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. We have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”

What a great profession of faith! First of all, note that even though it was a difficult statement, Peter recognizes that there is no where else to go because these are the words of eternal life. I find that so many people today are seeking for a more palatable gospel.  And so when you speak of judgement, of sin, of the wrath of God, of repentance, of obedience, they don’t like the sound of those types of doctrine.  So they turn away.  They walk away, looking for something more palatable, something that is more appealing to the flesh. They want a taste of religion but still to be able to satisfy the lusts of the flesh. But the fact is, that the truth is life, and anything less than the truth is a lie.  It’s like taking your prescription if you are seriously ill.  You have to take it all, if it is going to have the desired cure.  I will admit, there are some difficult things in the gospel.  It’s not easy to renounce the world, to give up sinful habits that you enjoy.  It’s not easy to let go of the pursuit of fame or wealth in exchange for life in the Spirit.  But death to the flesh is the way to life.  And if you don’t accept it all, then it’s not going to be effective.  There is no half truth and no half gospel.

And notice also that Peter capitalizes on what Jesus said earlier in vs.63 which says, “the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” Peter reiterates that in his profession; “You have the words of eternal life.”  He believes the word of Christ.  Secondly, he believes in Christ.  And what exactly does He believe?  He believes and has come to know that Jesus is the Holy One of God.  That’s a tremendous statement of faith.  That is saving faith.  That is faith whereby God imputes righteousness to our account.  

Peter and the disciples don’t know everything yet.  But as I said the gospel is progressive.  God is willing to take the faith of a child and develop it to mature faith.  But we start with what light we have been shown.  And as we are obedient in faith to that light, then He will show us more light.  Sometimes we have to believe what we don’t understand in order to gain understanding.  In due time, Peter and the apostles would see everything clearly.  But for now, they understand enough.  They understand that Jesus is holy, that He is from God, that He preexisted with God, and that God had sent Him to earth so that we might have eternal life.  They believed that He was the source of life, and that His word was the bread of heaven by which life is sustained.

Listen, Jesus spoke this sermon 2000 years ago, but today I believe God has spoken to you through His word, and as a result, God has given you a proposal; to believe in Christ, to receive Him as your Savior and Lord.  I trust that you have made a profession of your faith in response to that proposal; That He is the Holy One of God, that He is the source of life, even eternal life, and that believing in Him, you will trust Him for the salvation of your soul.  That is only made possible by the fact that Jesus offered Himself as our substitute, bearing our sins upon the cross, so that God might transfer our sins to Him, and Christ’s righteousness to us.  If you believe that, and receive that, then you have eternal life.  Note that vs.54, he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood, HAS eternal life.  Not will have, but has now.  It is the present reality of your salvation. Eternal life begins today if you receive Him today.  I trust that today is the day of your salvation.

The living water; John 4:1-19

I cannot read the story of the Samaritan woman at the well without thinking of something I used to hear people say when I was growing up.  They would sometimes say that a certain person would rather cross the street than have to speak to them.  Obviously, they believed that a certain person disliked them so much that they would go out of their way to avoid them.

There is a phrase in the Greek text in vs.9 that basically is saying the same thing.  It’s a word that conveys the idea that the Jews so despised the Samaritans that they would go out of their way to avoid dealings with the Samaritans, even to the extent of walking miles out of their way to keep from having to cross into the land of the Samaritans.  The Jews hated the  Samaritans and avoided anything that they had even touched.  But as we look at this story today, we see Jesus deliberately, purposefully, traveling not only to meet and speak with a Samaritan woman in the land of Samaria, but also to drink water from her cup. 

In Jesus’ day, of course, there was no running water.  Things we might consider a hardship today were typical things you had to routinely deal with in the course of the day at that time.  Generally, the women of the village or town were the ones who were responsible for drawing water.  You remember Rebecca drawing water for the camels when Abraham’s servant went to a well.  But they would usually do so in the evening when it was cooler, or perhaps first thing in the morning. 

But this woman in Samaria is going to the well in the middle of the day.  Around the sixth hour would be the Jewish way of saying around noon. So this wasn’t a typical time for her to be drawing water.  And Jesus has arrived at this well, which is identified as Jacob’s well, and is sitting there by the well.  There were probably steps that led down to the well. 

The text says Jesus was sitting there because He was weary from his journey.  Jesus and His disciples had been walking all morning having left Judea probably very early while it was cooler.  Most commentators believe that He had walked at least 20 miles that morning.  That’s quite a walk.  And it’s not a flat plain he walked either, but hilly terrain and rocky paths.  That’s the equivalent of walking from my house in Millville to the Cape May/Lewes Ferry.  I don’t think I could even ride a bike that far, much less hike that distance in five or six hours.

So Jesus was tired from His journey.  So much so that he sent the disciples ahead of Him into the village to buy food while He waited at the well.  Now I want to suggest that this is not happenstance.  I think that this is a case of divine appointment.  The normal way to go from Jerusalem to Galilee for most Jews would have been to go along the coast route or across the Jordan and then go around Samaria.  Orthodox Jews would have avoided going through Samaria.  They hated the Samaritans so much that they would go miles out of their way to avoid even walking through Samaria.

And part of the reason they hated them seems almost justified from a certain perspective. The Samaritans were considered half breeds – half Jew, half pagans – that had come about when the 10 northern tribes were taken into captivity by the Assyrians about 700 years before.  The educated, wealthy people were taken into captivity, but the Assyrians left some of the poorest Jews in the land to care for the land so that it did not revert to wilderness and to care for the cattle and so forth. But over time, these poor Jews left there intermarried with the pagan people that moved in to that area, and they adopted many pagan customs along with worshipping pagan gods while maintaining a degree of worship of the God of the Jews.

When the Jews came back into the land during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah, these people tried to hinder the returning Jews from rebuilding the temple.  The Jews ended up shunning them, and so the Samaritans went off in a huff and built their own temple in opposition.  So though the Samaritans claimed to be Jews, they had desecrated their heritage by intermarrying with pagans.  They claimed to worship the true God of Israel, but yet they also worshipped foreign gods.  They claimed to believe the Jewish scriptures, but they only recognized the first five books of the Old Testament, called the Pentateuch.  So it would seem that the Jews were almost justified in their hatred of the Samaritans. 

Yet Jesus has traveled by foot 20 miles across hot dry wilderness to get to this village in Samaria in time to meet this woman, who is coming out to draw water from a well outside of town, at a time when it was unlikely that she would meet anyone, which was obviously her intention.  The obvious question, is why?  Why would Jesus leave an area where everyone was coming out to see Him, where He was drawing bigger crowds than John the Baptist, why leave that success and head off to a place where no one even knew who He was? 

Well, I think the answer is hinted at in the previous chapter when Jesus tells Nicodemus that God so loved the world, that He sent His Son into the world, so that the world might be saved through Him.  Jesus Himself would say later, “The Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”(Luke 19:10)  This woman was from the lost tribes of Israel.  She was truly lost.  Her people were worshipping God in ignorance.  And they needed to know the truth so that they might escape the judgment which was upon the whole world.

Furthermore, I think Jesus comes to visit this woman as a counterpoint to the coming of Nicodemus to Jesus at night which we studied in chapter 3.  Nicodemus was a religious leader, he was the religious teacher of the Jews.  He was a moral, upright citizen.  He represented everything the Samaritan woman was not.  As I said before, if Nicodemus was the representative man, the best that man had to offer, then this woman was the representative sinner, even the worst of sinners.  A woman who was considered extremely immoral.  She had been married 5 times, and was now living with a man who wasn’t her husband.  She was lost.  But the good thing was, she knew she was lost.  Nicodemus thought he was a good man, and consequently Jesus had to show him that he wasn’t ever going to be good enough on his own merits to be able to enter into the kingdom of heaven.  But this woman knew she was a sinner, and though she tried to hide it, what she needed was for Christ to tell her about the grace of God.  Jesus came to save sinners.  He traveled 6 hours through the wilderness by foot to take the gospel to one woman who knew she was a sinner and was looking for redemption.

See, what we think of as good moral people, pillars in the community will usually come to church, they will seek for religion.  But unfortunately, they seek religion in order to bolster their sense of self righteousness and entitlement, as we saw with Nicodemus.  But people who are trapped in sin and are suffering the consequences of their sin rarely think of the church as a refuge.  Maybe they feel too guilty to come to church.  And yet these are the very people that we are called to seek out and tell the good news.  People that are spiritually sick, the outcasts, the downtrodden, the world weary.  They are the ideal candidates for the gospel.  As Jesus said in Mark 2:17,  “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

So Jesus travels 20 miles by foot to meet this woman.  And He is tired.  That shows us His humanity.  He was fully man.  But it also shows His omniscience.  He knows the woman is going to be there at noon.  He sends the disciples away so that He can talk to her privately so as not to unnecessarily embarrass her.  He knows her past, which she tries to hide.  His omniscience reveals His divinity.  He is fully God, and yet fully man.  This is the mystery of Christ, born of a woman, and yet fathered by the Holy Spirit.  Fully God and fully man. He is the Messiah, or the Christ.

And let me stress something on this point; He was fully human and fully God, that He might be our substitute, that He might be our Savior, but also, so that He might be our example.  That we might do as He did.  This text is one of the best passages in the Bible that illustrates how we are to go about being evangelists of the gospel.  How we are to witness to the lost.  There are many important principles to be learned from this passage, but not the least of them is how we are to evangelize the lost.

Notice then that Christ’s mission was calculated.  He was purposeful, He was strategic. He planned it, executed it, timed it perfectly so that He might set up this divine appointment with this woman. And note secondly that He was confrontational without being condemning.  When I say confrontational, that sounds menacing, doesn’t it?  But it doesn’t have to be.  It can simply be engaging.  In Jesus’ case, it was confrontational because it was unexpected.  It wasn’t considered appropriate for a Jew to speak to a Samaritan.  It was even more inappropriate for a man, a rabbi, to speak to a woman.  Yet Jesus says to her, “Give me a drink.”

If Jesus is omniscient, which I believe this text and many other scriptures clearly demonstrates that He is, then He certainly knew that she was an immoral woman.  She came to the well in this location, at this time, probably to escape scrutiny and scorn from the other women of the village who would usually all come at the same time to draw water and perhaps exchange gossip.  But Christ comes to a sinner, and yet as chapter 3 vs. 17 says, He did not come to condemn her, but to offer her salvation.  He shows her compassion.

But please notice though that Christ does not condone her sin.  The gospel message  has two pillars on which it depends; repentance and faith.  Jesus confronts her about her sin, and then tells her that He is the Messiah.  To receive the gift of salvation requires that both principles are enacted on our part.  We have to acknowledge our sin, confess our sin, and that He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  At the same time, we have to believe that Jesus is the Savior from sin which He accomplished by being the righteous substitute who paid the penalty for our sins.

There is a church not far from here that has a sign out front which I saw the other day which says, “God loves you just the way you are.”  I have to tell you something.  God doesn’t love your sin. God hates sin. But there is embedded in that church’s statement the implication  that you can live in your sin and God will accept you just the way you are. No need to change.  But that’s not the truth, and it’s not the gospel.  You must be converted, you must be changed.  Recognize you’re a sinner, seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ atonement on your behalf, and you will be converted, changed into a new creation. 

Peter, preaching in Jerusalem said in Acts 3:19  “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” To tell someone that they are fine just the way they are and that God will accept them when they are unrepentant and living in sin, is to tell them a lie and condemn them to eternal judgement.

Now notice how Jesus skillfully weaves the conversation around, starting  from a normal everyday occurrence such as a drink of water, and using it to teach a spiritual principle.  He asks for a drink, and she responds with a sarcastic response; “why are you asking me for a drink, knowing I am a Samaritan?”

But Jesus isn’t going to let Himself get sucked into a debate with this woman over race, over the cultural divide between Jews and Samaritans. Instead, He turns the tables on her.  And says, “If you knew the gift of God, and who says to you, “Give Me a drink” you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

Rather than focusing on the insufficiencies of heritage or race or culture or even morality, Jesus changes the conversation from one where she is automatically defensive, and instead He is the benefactor, rather than the beneficiary.  He doesn’t need her water, but He has the living water that she needs. 

Notice the difference between His approach with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman.  With Nicodemus who thought he was righteous, who was rich, who seemed to have everything going for him, including morality, Jesus told him what he was lacking.  He said he actually had nothing.  He had to be born all over again.  Nothing about him was good enough.  But with this woman, who had no standing in the community, who was culturally an outsider, and was a known immoral person, Jesus offers her the gift of God.  Grace that covers all her sin.  Eternal life which will spring up in her like living water. 

Though some principles in the gospel can not be deviated from, such as faith and repentance, we need to seek the discernment from God to know how to approach different people in different circumstances and from different environments.  God will give you the wisdom if you ask for it.  But notice that there isn’t a one size fits all approach to Christ’s evangelism.  Granted, He has divine discernment which we don’t have.  But we do have the wisdom that God gives to those that ask for it, so that we might do His will.   Recognizing the difference between those that are ready to receive the truth and those that are arrogant and think they know all the answers is possible through the discernment of the Holy Spirit as we witness in obedience to Him.

So first Jesus sidesteps her natural tendency for defensiveness, her attempt at being argumentative by turning the tables from her giving Him something, to Him giving her something.  But she still wants to argue.  Some people are like that.  No matter what you say, they want to argue.  The Bible says we are to be wise as a serpent, and harmless as a dove.  The devil is a serpent, isn’t he?  So we are to be wise to his schemes, and yet harmless as a dove.  As much as it depends on you, Paul said, be at peace with all men.  You aren’t going to win disciples to Christ by being argumentative, or by debating someone.  And neither are we going to win souls by insisting that they need to become moral to be saved.  But we become moral by being saved.  First there must be a change of heart, a conversion, and then out of the new heart comes a new morality. 

I’ve found when I deal with people who are hostile to me, who are defensive about their actions, that instead of focusing on the negatives or the repercussions of their decisions, if I focus on how much God has done for them and what God wants to do for them, how much God loves them, then many times that will have a softening effect on their heart and we can break through their defenses.  For instance, if you are dealing with a person who is caught up in alcohol abuse, rather than focusing on the physical ramifications of their drinking, focus on their spiritual vacuum that is making them enslaved to it. Focus on what Christ has done to give us a new life, a more fulfilling life.

That’s what Jesus is doing with this woman.  He knows her life is unfulfilling.  Imagine how many times must she have had her heart broken.  How hopeless she must have felt to have seen five marriages crumble and now even seeming to give up on marriage and resign herself to live in the shame of open adultery.  So Christ offers her new life;  the gift of living water if she will just ask for it.  But instead she is still defensive. She is not ready to trust Him yet.  She hasn’t gotten over this whole race thing, this whole us versus them mentality between the Jews and Samaritans.  So she says, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water? You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?”

Basically, she appeals to a sense of national self righteousness.  The Samaritans claimed Abraham as their father just as the Jews.  So she says Jacob, who was also called Israel, is her father as well and he gave them this well.  Again there is little jab on her part as she says “You aren’t greater than Jacob, are you?”  Well, of course Jesus was greater than Jacob.  He was the promised seed of Abraham from whom the whole world would be blessed.  He was the promised seed of Adam who would crush the serpent’s head.  He was no less than the promised Messiah, the Son of David, the Son of God. 

And yet Jesus doesn’t argue with her.  He doesn’t defend His honor.  He simply goes back to the metaphor of the water and the gift that God has of eternal life.  And in a very understated way He says that the water that Jacob gave has only the power to slake thirst temporarily, but the water that He gives will be a well springing up to eternal life. Vs.13, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

He is saying I am greater than Jacob, and yet He doesn’t say it outright. He doesn’t say I am greater as an arrogant, boastful claim, but He says as His water is greater water, and so by extension He is greater than Jacob.  He is making the point that the tangible blessings of being a child of Abraham might be evidenced by their land, by this well of Jacob, but the blessings of being a child of God far exceed temporal blessings.  They are spiritual blessings that spring up from Him supplying an endless supply of blessings throughout eternity.

Well, finally she starts to show a crack in her armor at this point.  She is obviously tired and weary and ready to have this blessing that Jesus is talking about.  But like a lot of people, they are primarily interested in the physical blessing and not the spiritual.  She says, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” 

Now what do you do with that?  On the one hand, she is saying I want this water that you are offering.  You offered it, then give it to me.  But on the other hand, she reveals her motivation; she wants physical relief.  She wants the spiritual water but only to make her life easier. 

Well, it’s interesting to see Jesus’ response.  At first glance, it would almost seem like there must be something missing between vs.15 and 16.  Jesus says in response, “Go, call your husband and come here.”  What’s that about?  Does she need her husband to get the water?  What relation has the husband to do with her desire for the gift of water? 

What I believe Jesus is doing is He is accepting her request for water, even though it is founded on physical desires, but He is going to treat it spiritually.  So even though she asks with imperfect intentions, Jesus is going to treat it spiritually and apply spiritual principles in order to bring her to salvation.  And to do that, He says, “ok, if you want the  living water, go bring here your husband.”  Jesus already knows that she doesn’t have a husband.  So He is saying this in order to get her to confront her sin.

Her response is still defensive. Jesus is touching a nerve but she doesn’t want to address it yet.  So she says, “I have no husband.”  And then Jesus reveals His divinity.  Vs. 17, Jesus said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” Now that’s pretty specific revelation.  That’s not general information and He had no way of knowing that kind of personal information.  And so it must have floored her which is evident from her response. She said “Sir, I perceive you are a prophet.”  Now she realizes that someone greater than Jacob is here.

But before I get into her response, notice that Jesus says to her “you are speaking the truth.”  He actually says that twice.  You have said correctly, and you have said truly.  Twice Jesus emphasizes that she has spoken the truth, even though she doesn’t speak the whole truth.  The whole point of what Jesus is doing here is to get her to recognize and accept the truth.  And before she can do that, she must first start telling the truth to God.  That’s what repentance is.  That’s where it starts; with telling God the truth.  You can lie to men, you can lie to yourself, and you can lie to God.  Even though God knows the truth, yet men still lie to Him.  But repentance starts with telling the truth about yourself.  And then accepting the truth about God. 

It’s amazing how people can lie to God, and yet we do it all the time.  We somehow don’t think that God sees.  David said in Psalm 66:18, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”  He says again in Psalm 51:6 “Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.”  The gospel is the truth, and we need to tell people the truth, and help them to tell God the truth, so that the truth would set them free. When someone finally comes to the point of recognizing the truth and confessing to God the truth that they are a sinner in need of salvation, then as Jesus said in John 8:32, “you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Well, we are not going to finish this study today.  We are going to have to continue it next week.  But what I want to impress on you today is that Jesus is our model for personal evangelism, that we might walk in His footsteps.  By His example we should be better equipped to fulfill the great commission in our neighborhoods, with our relatives, even with strangers who may be defensive or argumentative, as was this Samaritan woman.

But I hope to leave you with a commitment to be like Christ in your personal evangelism.  We obviously are not going to possess divine discernment as Christ had, we are not omniscient like Christ is.  We are not great teachers as Christ was.  But we do have the Spirit of Christ living in us.  And we do have the power of the Spirit to help us and give us wisdom if we will ask for it. 

However, I don’t think you nor I need to be omniscient to think of someone today that we know needs to hear the gospel.  Someone who is not saved.  I bet you could probably write down on a note card at least 5 people in your personal circle that you are certain do not know the Lord as their Savior.  I pray that you will write down those names, and then make a strategic plan to go see those people, to talk to them specifically about their need for salvation, about the gift of God which He has for those that will ask for it.  I challenge you to start to do this with at least one person on that list this week.  Come up with a plan, be purposeful about it, strategic.  Get rid of all possible distractions.  Then confront them with the gospel.  Expect them to get defensive.  Expect them to be argumentative.  But be wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove; in other words, don’t argue with them.  Stay focused on the gift of living water which satisfies every thirsty soul,  which God has prepared for those that will receive Jesus as their Savior. 

Or perhaps you are here today and you recognize that you have never been converted. You may be religious, but lacking new birth.  You may recognize that you’re a sinner, in need of being changed, given new life by the Spirit of God. I pray that today you will accept the invitation to drink of the water of life offered by Jesus Christ.  As Jesus said in John 7:37-38 “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’”  “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”

In the beginning was the Word, John 1:1-5

There is no doubt that John is the author of the Gospel of John. John was younger than his brother James, who were both known as the Sons of Thunder. And of the 12 disciples, John was the youngest as well. His mother was Salome, who during Christ’s ministry enquired of the Lord if her sons could sit on either side of His throne when He came into His kingdom. His father was Zebedee, who was a fisherman, and who had passed on his trade to his sons. John would seem to have been a disciple first of all of John the Baptist, but left him and followed Jesus after Christ’s baptism.

Perhaps it was the fact that John was the youngest, or perhaps that he was a relative of the family of Jesus, but whatever the reason, John seemed to have a special relationship with Jesus. He described himself as the “disciple whom Jesus loved.” He seemed to share a special closeness with Christ, being described as leaning his head upon His shoulder at the Last Supper. That closeness was born out by Christ at his crucifixion, when Jesus committed to him the care of His mother Mary. Another indication was the fact that when Jesus separated certain disciples from the rest, He always included John with Peter and James. They constituted Christ’s inner circle, his closest companions.

So without a doubt John was very close to Jesus. He very likely knew Jesus while growing up. But certainly for three years he was with Christ 24/7, eating, sleeping and traveling with Him everywhere He went.

Now as you know there are four gospels in the New Testament. Matthew, Mark and Luke are called the synoptic gospels. That means that they shared common themes or incidents in their accounts. But John’s gospel, being written many years later when John was an old man, does not follow their pattern. John writes from a completely different perspective and focuses on many things that are not found in the other gospels. For instance, John doesn’t detail the birth of Christ. And ironically there is no mention of parables in John’s gospel, which account for much of the teaching of Christ in the synoptic gospels.

But the best statement of the purpose of John’s gospel is found in his own words, in John 20:30-31, “Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” Note that John says the reason for his writing was to show that Jesus was the Messiah, (that is what the word Christ means) and that Jesus was the Son of God, so that you might believe He is the Messiah and the Son of God, and be saved unto eternal life.

Now that purpose that Jesus is the Son of God is clearly substantiated starting with the first verse of his gospel. And I don’t wish to rush over this point too quickly. Because it would stand to reason that if someone were a close, intimate friend of the One he was writing about, had spent 3 years living with Him on a day to day basis, it would not be likely that this would be the way in which you would begin His biography – by ascribing to Him deity. But in spite of that closeness, even because of that closeness, John begins by declaring the deity of Jesus Christ in a bold declarative statement. John leaves out the familiar details of Jesus life which reveal His humanity, such as His birth, but focuses on His divinity, His attributes of being God.

So as John begins his prologue, he begins not with the birth of Jesus as would be expected in a biography, but he begins in the beginning – in the beginning of Genesis 1:1 – and he declares that Jesus existed before creation. And that is a tremendous thing in light of the fact of his intimate knowledge of the human nature of Christ. Living 24/7 with Christ did not diminish his view of Jesus as God, but it only served to prove it to him, and so his purpose is to establish that for us at the outset, and it will continue to be the theme of all the book.

The fact that John alludes to Genesis 1:1 in his opening statement is fundamental to the doctrine of the deity of Jesus Christ. We know that the NT is the best commentary on the OT. Consider then Genesis 1:1, “in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” and compare that to John 1:1, “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”   And what we find is that Genesis 1 is explained by John 1; the eternal existence of God, who God is, what He is like and what was His purpose. In Genesis 1 we see the origin of creation, and all creatures. In John 1 we see the originator of all life and the origin of light. John makes it clear that from the beginning, from the beginning of eternity, the Word existed. Before time, before creation, the Word was. He was not created, but He existed before creation.

So after establishing His eternal nature, John establishes His identity. Not His name but His identity; which is the Word. You might think that the Word is an ambiguous title, hardly a name for God. In the original Greek the word is logos; which means word. That may sound like a strange title to us for God. But the fact is that at the time of his writing, it was a familiar way of referring to God by both the Jews and the Greeks. 

In the Old Testament, we often see a reference to the word of the Lord, or that the word of God came to a certain prophet. In the mind of the ancient Jews, the phrase “the word of God” could be used to refer to God Himself. The word of the Lord was synonymous with the will of God, the law of God and the mind of God. And even in the Genesis account of creation, we see the Word of God active in creation, with the phrase, “and God said…” over and over again being the operative agent in creation.  God is Spirit, invisible, but the expression of God is the Word.

Then among the Greek philosophers, the word logos was the way they described the reason, the thought behind the cosmic power of the universe. They saw the logos as the “Ultimate Reason” that controlled all things, that kept order in the world. Though the translation of the term logos is simply “word,” in the ancient Greek world it meant a lot more than that. Ancient Greek philosophers were concerned with answering the ultimate questions of the universe. They were seeking to find ultimate truth. They debated and argued and reasoned among themselves in order to try to discover the ultimate reality that lies behind the universe.

Over time, as philosophers such as Plato pondered these questions, they came up with a term to describe this ultimate reality, and the term they came up with was logos. The logos came to be understood as the thought and reason which gave life and meaning to the universe. Within the realm of Greek philosophy, however, this logos was largely understood to be an impersonal force, not a personal being.

But John taps into their understanding of God by saying Jesus is the logos, the eternal God of creation, the God of truth and reason. Rather than an impersonal force, the logos revealed in John’s gospel is a personal being who can be received or rejected by other people as we will see when we come to vs. 11–12. This logos became flesh as a human being and manifested the glory of God to man in v. 14. John explains that Jesus is the personification of the Word. God was manifested as a person, not an it, not an impersonal force.

Not only does the logos refer to the identity of God, but obviously it refers to the very words of God. Jesus said in John 6:63 “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” The word of God has been written down for us in the Bible, and it is holy and eternal. As Peter said in 1 Peter 1:25, “The word of the Lord endures forever.” The word of God cannot be separated from the essence of God. That is why Jesus would say, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” God has not only manifested Himself in Jesus, but He has revealed Himself through His word.   He is inseparable from His word, and that is why we can trust His word. His word cannot be broken. His word according to Psalms 12:6, has been refined as silver 7 times. It is pure, it is truth, it is life.

So John alludes to all of the attributes of God in this title, but brings them to life in the person of Christ. So in the beginning was the Word. Then John tells us who exactly the Word is. He says “and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” Now that is so important because it lays the groundwork for the doctrine of the trinity. It tells us is that not only is the Logos the eternal God, but He is distinct from the eternal God. And this is where we come to understand that there is one God and yet there are three persons.

Now I cannot explain how that is possible. But the scriptures make it clear that it is so. It is the triune nature of God to exist in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We see that expressed again in Genesis 1:26, when God said, “let Us make man in Our image.” Plural. In the beginning God created, then the Spirit of God moved across the face of the waters, and then God said. God, Spirit and Logos. Three in One. Jesus is God in the flesh, the Holy Spirit is Jesus in the Spirit. God made visible in the Logos, Jesus made invisible in the Spirit. So then the Word became flesh in Jesus. Both Peter and Paul refer to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9 and 1 Peter 1:11). Jesus said in John 16:13-14 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.” And then even we become sons of God by the Spirit of Christ indwelling in the flesh of men who have received the righteousness of Christ.

So clearly presented in this verse is the doctrine that the Word existed with God from the beginning, but also that the Word was God. Many false doctrines such as the Mormons or the Jehovah Witnesses reveal their apostasy on this doctrine. They insert the article “a” before God so that Jesus is presented as a god. But according to practically all Greek scholars, that is not a proper rendering of the translation. And even if they were to make that claim, then what do you do with Hebrews 1:1-3 “God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

Or how about Col. 2:9 “For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form.” Or how about the Old Testament, in Isaiah 9:6 “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.” Or how about Jesus’ own declaration to Philip, when He said, “if you have seen Me you have seen the Father.” Or “I and the Father are One.”

The whole basis of our salvation depends upon God Himself becoming flesh in the person of Christ to become our substitute by dying on the cross and paying the penalty for sin. Only the innocent could exchange His life for the guilty. And only the Holy God could atone for the sins of all the sins of the world. No good man could even atone for one person’s sins other than His own, much less the sins of the world. Christ had to be God in the flesh to purchase our redemption. Either Jesus was God or He was an imposter, and worse, a blasphemer and deserved to be crucified. But we believe the word of God, that Jesus was the exact representation of God, pre existent with God, who was God and yet distinct from God, identified as the Word of God.

Vs.2, “He was in the beginning with God.” Or as the KJV says perhaps more literally, “the same was in the beginning with God.” In the beginning has no beginning. The Word not only was coeternal with God and coexistent with God from the beginning, but was eternally in active communion with Him. One commentator said it this way, “Not simply the Word with God, but God with God.” John not only reiterates the fundamental truth for emphasis, but to add emphasis to the fact of their unity. The Word was One with God in the beginning.

And then in vs. 3, as we have already noted in Genesis 1, all things God created came into being through Him. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” God spoke through His Word, and all things that were created came through the Logos. That’s what the author of Hebrews said as well as we just read while ago: “in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.” And consider what Paul said in Col. 1:16 “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things have been created through Him and for Him.”

Here is the proof of His eternal nature. Everything that exists came into being through Him. That’s a positive declaration, simple, clear evidence, that the Lord Jesus Christ is eternal deity. Everything that exists, He made. It all came from Him. He didn’t come from anyone, or anything. Everything came from Him. 1 Corinthians 8:6 “yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.”

Notice that “all things” – that includes us – were made for Him, we exist for Him. We were made to share His glory, to have intimacy with Him, to walk with Him, to talk with Him, to be the bride of Christ. That is the purpose of creation. Creation was made for man, and man was made for God. That was the declaration of one of the church’s earliest theologians, Augustine, who said, “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” We were made with the spark of divinity, in the likeness of God, in the image of God. All things created were brought into being by simply the spoken word of God. But man was brought into being by the hands of God which formed us out of the clay, and given life by the very lips of God when He breathed into us His breath,  the breath of life. But unfortunately sin killed that divine spark, and it lay dormant until the Son of God our Creator breathes again into us the Spirit of Life.

And that principle of spiritual life is what John lays the foundation for in vs.4, “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” That is such a profound statement. “In Him was life.” The word used is not bios, because He’s not just talking about biological life, which is the rudimentary form of life. But the word is zoe, which has to do with spiritual life, the vitality of life, the fullness of life. The Word is the source of life. We already quoted Jesus saying that in John 6:63, “the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” And “I am the way, the truth and the life.” Jesus is the source, the originator of all life.

Paul said in Acts 17:28 “for in Him we live and move and exist.” Hebrews 1:3 says, He “upholds all things by the word of His power.” Jesus Himself said, “I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly.” He was talking about zoe, the real, spiritual life, even eternal life of which He is the source.

Near Geneva, Switzerland, buried under the ground in a 17 mile wide circular tunnel is what is called the Hadron Collider. And this scientific machine’s purpose is to break apart the smallest particles of subatomic matter, in order to find the origin of life. To get these protons to break apart they have to smash these particles together at the speed of light. They have been conducting these experiments for years, and the result is that they continue to discover even more subatomic particles and mysteries upon mysteries in their hope to reveal the source of life. But here in John 1 God declares the source of life, which is Jesus Christ, the Logos. He holds all things together by the word of His power.

This life is the light of men, speaking of spiritual light as well as natural light. It isn’t that the Word “contains” life and light; He is life and light. John is connecting life and light. The one who was the life of men became the light of men. The light to lead them out of darkness. In the beginning of creation God said, “Let there be light.” So in the new creation the pre existent source of life is the light that illuminates creation. That’s why He came into the world, to shine light into the darkness, to reveal God that we might see the truth of God. Jesus said in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world,” whoever “follows Me will not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Therefore, without Jesus, the world is dead and in darkness. When man became separated from God because of sin he became spiritually dead, he lost his spiritual life, so he became dead and in darkness. He became lost.

But thank God for the last phrase of vs.5, “ And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.” The KJV says does not comprehend it. That is an unfortunate translation which is understood to mean that man could not understand the light. But what it should read is the darkness could not overcome it. The light prevailed over the darkness, not the other way around. The light can not lose against the darkness; the darkness will never overcome it.

The darkness refers to the realm of darkness, the realm of Satan, the powers of darkness. Jesus said in the hours before the cross that this hour belongs to the power of darkness. Eph. 6:12 says, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” But the darkness cannot overpower the Light. The Light shines in the darkness. Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. Though all the forces of hell conspired together to keep man in darkness, the Light has come into the world so that man might be saved from death and darkness and dwell in the light for eternity.

John has made it abundantly clear concerning the doctrine of the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus is eternal God, the Word of God made flesh, that we might know God, that we might know the truth and that the truth would be the light by which we come to have life in Him. I hope that you have received Him as your Lord and Savior and believed the truth of the gospel. That is why He came, to give light and life to a world lost in darkness. Today the light of God has shone upon you. Come to the Light and believe and you will have real life, and have it more abundantly.

Repentance, the path to Reconciliation, Genesis 43-45:15

We have been looking at the life of Joseph and his brothers in our study of Genesis. And I would like to try to conclude this story in this message today. But to do that I would have to cover so much scripture that it would not be possible to adequately deal with it all in one sitting. So today we will look at the next two and a half chapters and see if we can’t come to a reasonable conclusion. There will be some other details of the lives of Jacob and Joseph and the eleven brothers that we will not cover, but our intention in studying Genesis was not to do an in depth verse by verse study, but to cover the highlights in Genesis.

And so you will remember that the brothers have visted Egypt to buy grain during the famine, and they met Joseph, who hid his real identify from them, they were accused of being spies, their brother Simeon was kept in prison pending their return with Benjamin, and they went back to Canaan with food and provisions, and confronted their father with the verdict of Joseph that they must return with Benjamin to prove their innocence. And you will remember that we said that Joseph did not do all of that in order to take revenge upon his brothers, but to bring them under conviction of their sin, to bring them to repentance, and ultimately to bring about reconciliation and deliverance.

Now in chapter 43, vs 1 we read, “Now the famine was severe in the land. So it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, “Go back, buy us a little food.” Judah spoke to him, however, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’ “If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food. But if you do not send [him,] we will not go down; for the man said to us, ‘You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'” Then Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had [another] brother?” But they said, “The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you [another] brother?’ So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?” Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones. “I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him [back] to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever. 1 “For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice.”

It’s likely that the brothers went to Egypt for grain in the first year of the famine. Joseph knew it would last seven years, but his brothers did not. They probably thought it was one bad year, but the second year of famine came quickly. Perhaps Jacob originally thought they had enough to survive the famine and they would never need to go back with Benjamin, and never need to go back and get Simeon. But the famine wore on, and eventually they ran out of food.

So necessity drove Jacob to do something he would normally never do. We could speculate that Jacob prayed earnestly for the famine to break, and asked God to send relief. We could speculate that Jacob might have became angry with God for not answering those prayers. But God had a plan which was so much better for Jacob than he could ever imagine.

Notice also that Judah shows signs of having a truly repentant heart. Judah was willing to put his own life on the line as a guarantee for Benjamin. Previously, Judah was the one who had proposed the sale of Joseph. But now he shows works in keeping with repentance.

Look at vs 11. “Then their father Israel said to them, “If [it must be] so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds. Take double [the] money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake. Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man; and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” So the men took this present, and they took double [the] money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to his house steward, “Bring the men into the house, and slay an animal and make ready; for the men are to dine with me at noon.” So the man did as Joseph said, and brought the men to Joseph’s house. Now the men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “[It is] because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time that we are being brought in, that he may seek occasion against us and fall upon us, and take us for slaves with our donkeys.”

It’s particularly poignant that Jacob, or Israel says, “may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man.” Were it not for the mercy of God, then none of us would have a hope of salvation. Without divine mercy there can be no reconciliation. Mercy is not getting what you deserve. None of us deserve salvation. It is a gift of God. And these brothers deserved death for what they had done. At the very least, they deserved a life in prison. And yet though Joseph is working to bring them to repentance, already his mercy has spared their lives, and planned for their deliverance and reconciliation.

Then notice that when Joseph sees them, he wants to invite them to eat with him. Eating a meal together is symbolic of fellowship, of communion. Joseph is presented here as a type of Jesus: He wants to dine with us, meaning that Jesus wants fellowship with us. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” And one of the first things we are told will happen after the second coming of Christ is that we will dine with Him at the marriage supper of the Lamb.

Vs19 So they came near to Joseph’s house steward, and spoke to him at the entrance of the house, and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food, and it came about when we came to the lodging place, that we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full. So we have brought it back in our hand. We have also brought down other money in our hand to buy food; we do not know who put our money in our sacks.” He said, “Be at ease, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them. Then the man brought the men into Joseph’s house and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their donkeys fodder. So they prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon; for they had heard that they were to eat a meal there.”

The brothers thought it was wise to explain all the things that had happened last time to the steward of Joseph’s house before they had to explain it to Joseph himself. The brothers expected to be seized as slaves and have everything taken from them. Yet Joseph treated them with kindness. This love and mercy from Joseph would win them over and bring them to full repentance. And in the same way, though our sins caused Jesus to be crucified, yet He does not seek revenge upon us, but in HIs mercy He forgives us, and desires us to be reconciled to Him.

Vs 26 When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present which was in their hand and bowed to the ground before him. Then he asked them about their welfare, and said, “Is your old father well, of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?” They said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” They bowed down in homage. As he lifted his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, he said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” And he said, “May God be gracious to you, my son.” Joseph hurried [out] for he was deeply stirred over his brother, and he sought [a place] to weep; and he entered his chamber and wept there. Then he washed his face and came out; and he controlled himself and said, “Serve the meal.” So they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is loathsome to the Egyptians. Now they were seated before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth, and the men looked at one another in astonishment. He took portions to them from his own table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. So they feasted and drank freely with him.”

Joseph was visibly moved at seeing his only full brother, Benjamin, whom he last saw as only a small child. He was so overcome with emotion that he went into his chamber and wept.

It’s also important to notice the segregation that is shown with his family. As far as anyone could tell, Joseph was an Egyptian, and the Egyptians did not eat with other nationalities or really have any social intercourse with them. And so here we see the wisdom of the plan of God. Through this event, God would bring the entire family of Israel into Egypt, where they were isolated from the surrounding people for some 400 years. In that time, they multiplied greatly, increasing to the millions. If God had allowed them to remain in Canaan, they would have probably assimilated into the idolatrous societies of Canaan. God not only had to take the family of Israel out of the corrupt environment of Canaan, but He had to put them among a racially separated people who would not often intermarry or mingle with them. And so to provide for the posterity of the nation of Israel, God had sent Joseph on ahead to prepare the way.

Notice that Benjamin’s serving was five times as much as any of theirs: This was another test, to see how they would react when the younger brother was favored, because they had resented it so much when Joseph was favored by his father. Maybe Joseph wanted to see if there was a change in the heart of his brothers, or if they were the same men who threw him into a pit and were deaf to his cries for help. That’s what repentance is, a change of heart. And it would seem that his brothers did in fact exhibit a change of heart.

Chapter 44, vs 1Then Joseph commanded his house steward, saying, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack. Put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, and his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph had told him. As soon as it was light, the men were sent away, they with their donkeys. They had just gone out of the city, and were not far off, when Joseph said to his house steward, “Up, follow the men; and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good? Is not this the one from which my lord drinks and which he indeed uses for divination? You have done wrong in doing this.’ ”

So he overtook them and spoke these words to them. They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing. Behold, the money which we found in the mouth of our sacks we have brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house? With whomever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s slaves.” So he said, “Now let it also be according to your words; he with whom it is found shall be my slave, and the rest of you shall be innocent.” Then they hurried, each man lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack. He searched, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. Then they tore their clothes, and when each man loaded his donkey, they returned to the city.

This is probably the best test of whether or not the hearts of his brothers had changed or not. When they had sold Joseph into slavery, they had showed no regret upon seeing him taken into captivity and sold to a foreign country. So it would seem that Joseph wanted to see how they would respond when Benjamin was to be taken captive. Would they have the same regard for Benjamin as they had for Joseph? But the fact that they tore their clothes, that they showed such grief, and returned to the city without considering the cost to themselves was a good indication that they had a true change of heart.

Vs14 When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there, and they fell to the ground before him. Joseph said to them, “What is this deed that you have done? Do you not know that such a man as I can indeed practice divination?” So Judah said, “What can we say to my lord? What can we speak? And how can we justify ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we and the one in whose possession the cup has been found.” But he said, “Far be it from me to do this. The man in whose possession the cup has been found, he shall be my slave; but as for you, go up in peace to your father.”

Judah says to Joseph, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants.” With these words, Judah revealed God’s work of repentance among the brothers. Even though they might have claimed innocence, or that the cup was planted in the bag, they have begun to recognize the hand of God in all of this. God is bringing back their sin to haunt them. They know that God has seen their iniquity, and their sin is the cause of all this trouble.

Vs18 Then Judah approached him, and said, “Oh my lord, may your servant please speak a word in my lord’s ears, and do not be angry with your servant; for you are equal to Pharaoh. My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father or a brother?’ We said to my lord, ‘We have an old father and a little child of his old age. Now his brother is dead, so he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.’ Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me that I may set my eyes on him.’ But we said to my lord, ‘The lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’ You said to your servants, however, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’ Thus it came about when we went up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. Our father said, ‘Go back, buy us a little food.’ But we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons; and the one went out from me, and I said, “Surely he is torn in pieces,” and I have not seen him since. If you take this one also from me, and harm befalls him, you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’ Now, therefore, when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad’s life, when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die. Thus your servants will bring the gray hair of your servant our father down to Sheol in sorrow. For your servant became surety for the lad to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then let me bear the blame before my father forever.’ Now, therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the lad a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers. 34For how shall I go up to my father if the lad is not with me—for fear that I see the evil that would overtake my father?”

Judah’s impassioned speech to Joseph is a model of a heartfelt, desperate appeal. Of Judah’s speech, F.B. Meyer wrote: “In all literature, there is nothing more pathetic than this appeal.” H.C. Leupold wrote, “This is one of the manliest, most straightforward speeches ever delivered by any man. For depth of feeling and sincerity of purpose it stands unexcelled.” Barnhouse called it “the most moving address in all the Word of God.” Perhaps we should see it as a great example of a humble, heartfelt prayer for mercy.

Twenty years before, Joseph’s brothers didn’t care about their father when they reported Joseph’s supposed death. Judah’s appeal showed they were now greatly concerned for the feelings and welfare of their father. This was further evidence of a change of heart. Paul, in Acts 26:20 speaks of his preaching to the Jews and Gentiles, that they should repent, and do deeds appropriate to repentance. Repentance then is more than just feeling sorry, but making restitution when possible, doing the opposite of the evil which you have done before. And we see this evidence of repentance in Judah’s speech.

Chapter 45, vs 1. Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried, “Have everyone go out from me.” So there was no man with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. He wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard [it,] and the household of Pharaoh heard [of it.] Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence.

Joseph ordered all the Egyptians out of the room and then was alone with his brothers. His great emotion showed the depth of his love for his brothers and that he did not cruelly manipulate them out of spite. He was directed by God to make these arrangements, and it hurt him to do it. But 20 years of pent up hurt came bursting out of him in an outcry that reached the ears of Pharaoh, and shocked his unsuspecting brothers. They were dumbfounded and unable to even speak at his revelation.

Vs4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come closer to me.” And they came closer. And he said, “I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. Now do not be grieved or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine [has been] in the land these two years, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant in the earth, and to keep you alive by a great deliverance. Now, therefore, it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.”

Joseph remembered their sin of many years before. Yet in mercy, Joseph did not want to punish them, nor for them to be grieved or angry with themselves. Yet he did not diminish what his brothers did. But he saw that God’s purpose in it all was greater than the evil of the brothers.

All Joseph’s sorrows were for a greater purpose. God used them to preserve his family and provide the conditions for it to become a nation. Joseph was a victim of men, but God turned it around for His glory. None of it was for a loss. After his father Jacob died, Joseph assured his brothers that he would not cause them grief for their sin against him. He would say on that occasion, in Genesis 50:20 “As for you, you meant evil against me, [but] God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive.”

What is noticeably missing on the part of Joseph is a victim mentality. I think the whole world is sick with victim mentality today. Everyone is always focused on me, me, me, poor pitiful me. Everyone focuses on the wrong or the perceived wrong they are suffering under. But Joseph was willing to endure the sufferings that he went through for the sake of the benefit of others. And that is the attitude that we should have as Christians.

Heb 12:2-3 tells us that Jesus was willing to suffer for our sakes and that we should follow His example. “Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

So we see that God used man’s evil for HIs good purposes. Charles Spurgeon said, “How wonderfully those two things meet in practical harmony – the free will of man and the predestination of God! Man acts just as freely and just as guiltily as if there were no predestination whatever; and God ordains, arranges, supervises, and over-rules, just as accurately as if there were no free will in the universe.”

Joseph realized God ruled his life, not good men, not evil men, not circumstances, or fate. God was in control, and because God was in control, all things would work together for good.

Vs 9 “Hurry and go up to my father, and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph, “God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall live in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children and your flocks and your herds and all that you have. There I will also provide for you, for there are still five years of famine [to come,] and you and your household and all that you have would be impoverished.”‘ Behold, your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin [see,] that it is my mouth which is speaking to you. Now you must tell my father of all my splendor in Egypt, and all that you have seen; and you must hurry and bring my father down here.” Then he fell on his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck. He kissed all his brothers and wept on them, and afterward his brothers talked with him.”

Well that passage concludes with the kisses of full reconciliation and the frank communion, tears answering to tears as they fall onto each others neck. Full reconciliation has taken place. You can certainly see in this incident the benefits of divine discipline. Peace finally comes to the family after 20 years of having Joseph’s crime upon their hearts. Conviction has come and now finally repentance and works made for repentance are done and the result is they find themselves in the hand of a loving God, who gives them peace, who gives them protection through the prime minister, who will supply all of their needs, deliver them from death, and provide for their future.

And that of course, is a picture of the Lord Jesus who works to bring us to the conviction of our sin, which is followed by true repentance, having a change of heart which we call conversion. And when we are given forgiveness of our sins by the mercy of God, then we can have full reconciliation with God, so that we might have fellowship and communion with the Lord who will supply and provide for all our needs, and provide for our eternal inheritance.

The sacrifice of Isaac, Genesis 22:1-19

Faith is the most desirable characteristic of a person that would be approved by God. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is impossible to please God. The most exceptional attribute of the life of Abraham was his faith.  Abraham is presented in chapter 11 of Hebrews as perhaps the greatest champion of faith in all of the Bible.  The apostle Paul in his writings gives Abraham as the supreme illustration of salvation, saying four times, that Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.  Abraham believed God. Not Abraham believed in God.  The devils believe in God and tremble, but they are not saved.  Abraham believed God.  He believed God’s word.  And it was reckoned to him as righteousness. 

So Hebrews lists three examples of the faith of Abraham as exemplary.  The first was when God told Abraham to leave Ur of the Chaldeans and go to a land that He show him. And Abraham believed God and went out, not knowing where he was going, but believing what God had promised him. 

The second example of faith was the birth of Isaac.  God had promised that from his seed would come a nation, from whom all the nations of the earth would be blessed.  And so Abraham believed God and waited for 25 years for the son of promise to come.  He waited beyond the normal childbearing years of both his wife himself, until Hebrews says his body was as good as dead. And when all natural hope was gone, then God supernaturally caused Sarah to give birth to a son whom He named Isaac.

The third example of faith presented in Hebrews was Abraham offering up Isaac to God as a sacrifice, according to the word of God.  Hebrews summarizes it this way, “By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten [son;]  [it was he] to whom it was said, “IN ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS SHALL BE CALLED.”  He considered that God is able to raise [people] even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.”

Now it is to this third example of faith that we look at today, and in so doing we learn much about the nature of faith, the nature of worship, and the nature of atonement.  

As we begin chapter 22, many years have transpired since the birth of Isaac.  Some commentators believe that Isaac would have been a teenager about 17 years of age.  Some think that Isaac might have been as old as 25 years. I don’t know the correct answer, but let’s take an average and say he is about 21 years old.  He is a young man.  Abraham is about 120 years old by this point. Nothing is mentioned in this chapter about Sarah, but she would have been about 110 years old.  But the thing that should be especially noted is that Isaac was physically equal to or stronger than Abraham would have been at this time in his life, and well able to resist Abraham physically if he would have wanted to.

It’s also noteworthy that there has been over 20 years of God’s silence up to this point.  Prior the Isaac’s birth, God had been silent for 13 years.  I find that significant in light of many Christians that seem to hear a special message from God every other day.  They are always wanting to tell people what God said to them, as if they are so important that God speaks to them all the time in an audible voice, and with much more regularity than He ever spoke to Abraham or Moses.  I would suggest to you that in our times God has spoken fully and completely in HIs word, and He speaks primarily through His word. So if you are hearing voices then you probably should go see someone about that.  Abraham and Moses did not have the written word of God.  We do, and it is sufficient for every need, that we may be fully equipped for every good work.

Now let’s read the word, starting in chapter 22, vs 1.  “Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”  He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”  So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.”

First note that the scripture says that God tested Abraham. God didn’t tempt Abraham, he tested him.  A test is not designed to make one fail, but to make one grow. It is meant to reveal. And in this case, God means to test Abraham’s faith, to stretch it, to grow his faith, and to reveal his faith. And I would suggest that this test wasn’t just for Abraham’s sake, but for Isaac’s sake, and for Sarah’s sake, and for our sakes. 1Cor. 10:11 says, “Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.”

The soteriological implications of this test are indicated in Hebrews, as it says Isaac was a type.  That means that Isaac was a type of Christ.  And while that aspect of this test are very important, and we will get to that, it’s also important to learn some principles from Abraham’s response.

So notice Abraham’s response to God’s call of “Abraham.”  He says “here I am.”. That indicates a willingness to serve the Lord. It’s like roll call.  The teacher would call your name and you would say, “present.” Or “here.” I remember when my youngest daughter Melissa was very young.  She was very high spirited, to say the least.  And I would sometimes reprimand her in a very stern voice, “Melissa, stop that!” That often had no effect, and so I would say with an even harsher tone, and at a much higher decibel, “Melissa! Do you hear me?” And her lip would start to quiver, and she would answer, “Hear me.” I don’t think God was calling Abraham to reprimand him.  But Abraham showed by his immediate and submissive reply a willingness to obey the voice of the Lord.

God said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.”  There is a principle of hermeneutics which is known as the principle of first mention. That is, that the first time a word is used in scripture gives us some sense of the definition of that word. And there are a few words in this section that we find for the first time.  For instance, this is the first time that the word “love” is used in scripture.  And we learn here that Biblical love has in it the element of sacrifice.  The Greek word in the NT we often find used for love is agape.  And agape means sacrificial love.  Love in this instance in Genesis is used for the love of a father for his son.  But again, it’s a sacrificial love.

Interestingly, God uses this statement to speak of Isaac as Abraham’s only son, even though Ishmael was also Abraham’s son.  Perhaps because Ishmael was not the son that God had promised.  And also by this time Ishmael had been sent away, and so he was not the son of the covenant that God had made concerning his seed. It also is a picture of God sending His only begotten Son to die on the cross.  John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

However, what God was asking Abraham to do must have seemed completely contrary to the promise that He had given Abraham.  God had specifically said to Abraham that he would have a son from his own body, by His wife Sarah, that he should call his name Isaac, and that from Isaac would come a nation of descendants, though whom all the nations would be blessed.  So God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son was counter to what God had said would happen.  

However, that knowledge did not mean that Abraham was free to disobey. In those dark hours before the dawn, Abraham must have wrestled with this dilemma. And the only answer that he must have come up with was that if God wanted him to sacrifice his son, then God had to raise him from the dead.  Because the promise of God was irrevocable.  And Abraham knew that God could not lie.  God would keep His word.  Though this command seemed contrary to every thing that Abraham believed to be true, yet somehow God would be able to accomplish His word in spite of what seemed like the exact opposite.

God also told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac on Mt. Moriah, on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.  This mountain is none other than the same mount that Solomon would one day build the temple on.  And so on that mountain in the future there would be thousands of lambs slain for the atonement of the sins of the people.  That mountain, by the way, was a three day journey for Abraham and Isaac.  One Bible scholar suggested that in Abraham’s mind, Isaac was already dead those three days, as he considered the terrible fate that lay in store for Isaac. 

Vs 3 “So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance.  Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”

Notice that the scripture does not say that Abraham said anything to God after His command.  Abraham’s obedience was not by giving lip service, but getting up early in the morning and going to the mountain as God had said. I think if I would have been in Abraham’s place, I would have argued with God, pleaded with God, and then when that failed, I would have tried to delay going for as long as possible.  But Abraham does none of those things.  He gets up early. Abraham probably had not slept any more that night after God spoke with him, and so as soon as it was feasible, he got up and started his journey.  And notice that there is no record of how Abraham felt about this whole deal. His feelings are not taken into consideration.  Rather, in faith, he obeyed.

On the third day of traveling Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from a distance.  Little did he realize that what he saw what would one day be Jerusalem, the capital of the nation that he was promised, and he saw the mountain that the temple would be erected upon. But he did recognize the site for the sacrifice that he had been told he must make.

However,  the comment Abraham made to his servants is one that I do not want you to gloss over.  First of all, this is another first mention.  This time it is the word worship.  Worship means something very different to modern Christian congregations today.  If you ask people today what worship means, they might singing praise songs, or seeking God’s presence, or seeking God’s power.  But for Abraham, worship meant sacrificing his son.  Worship is loving God, and loving God is being obedient to God.  The prophet Samuel said, ““Has the LORD as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” 

But there is another element of Abraham’s statement to his servants which bears mentioning.  He says “ I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.”  Abraham believes that both he and Isaac will return to them.  And I believe that Abraham believed this with all his heart.  Otherwise, no parent could do what he did.  Even the most devout man could not take his son to a mountain and slay him and then burn his body unless he believed with all his heart and soul that God would provide a way to sustain his life, or raise him up again to life. Abraham had faith in God.  He believed God. He believed what God had promised. And so he has confidence that they both will return.

Heb 11:1-2 “Now faith is the assurance of [things] hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.  For by it the men of old gained approval.”

After leaving the servants we read in vs 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together.  Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”  Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.”

Isaac as a type of Christ is also shown by the fact that Abraham laid the wood for the altar upon Isaac’s back.  And Jesus also carried the cross on which he was crucified.  Abraham carried the fire and the knife.  In Isaiah we are told that it pleased God to crush Him, putting Him to grief.  God slew Jesus upon the cross as a sacrifice for sinners, even as Abraham carried the instruments of the death of his son in his hand.

In this passage we hear from Isaac, who has a faith of his own to be tested.  He asks, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” I suppose we must take this to mean that up to this point, Isaac still had no clue that God has chosen him to be the offering. But I think the realization must have come soon afterwards, as he considers his father’s demeanor.  Abraham had unquenchable faith, but that doesn’t mean that he had an unflenchable countenance.  I am sure that it would have been all that Abraham could do to keep from sobbing as he heard Isaac’s question.  And the text says the two of them walked on together.  That statement is repeated twice.  Some commentator say that indicates agreement between them.  I don’t know.  I think it is just measuring out heartbreak one step at a time.

But Abraham’s answer to Isaac is prophetic, in more ways than one.  He says, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”  I don’t think Abraham expected God to provide a ram stuck in a thicket. I think Abraham fully expected to have to slay his son, and that God would raise him from the dead. But one way or another God would provide, and ultimately, God provided through Abraham’s seed the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. Jesus was the Lamb of God that died in our place, so that we might have life, even as the ram would be a substitute for Isaac that he might live.

What we see here a remarkable picture of the work of Jesus at the cross, thousands of years before it happened. The son of promise willingly went to be sacrificed in obedience to his father, carrying the wood of his sacrifice up the hill,  with full confidence in the promise of the resurrection.

Vs 9 “Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.  Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.  But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”  He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”  Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind [him] a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.”

It’s really remarkable to notice the unsung faith of Isaac.  Somewhere between the walk up the mountain and the building of the altar, Isaac must have recognized that he was to be the sacrifice.  And yet we are not told of Isaac resisting, or of him arguing with Abraham.  We are not told this, but it must be that Abraham finally explained to Isaac God’s command for him to sacrifice his son.  And yet obviously Isaac believed God and submitted his life to God’s will. God had not spoken directly to Isaac.  God had promised Abraham, and Abraham relayed God’s promises to Isaac.  And yet still Isaac believes.

That’s a similar faith to what we are supposed to have, isn’t it?  We have not personally heard Jesus teaching in Galilee.  We did not personally see His miracles.  We were not eyewitnesses to His majesty.  But we believe the testimony of eyewitnesses.  We believe their word which they wrote,  and we believe it as being inspired by the Holy Spirit.  So we risk our lives, we put our very lives at stake based on their word as being the word of God.

So much is made of Abraham’s faith, and as it should be.  But we should also consider Isaac’s faith, who submitted his life to his father’s word as the word of God.  Jesus also seemed to give much credit to those who would believe afterwards, saying to Thomas in John 20:29  “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed [are] they who did not see, and [yet] believed.”

 I’m sure Isaac helped build the altar, laid the wood upon it, and then climbed up on it, submitting himself as a sacrifice.  Amazing submission and obedience on the part of Isaac.  I’m sure he could have easily escaped. I’m sure that most men would have tried.  But Isaac submitted to the will of God and believed that God would raise him from the dead.

So Abraham lifts the knife up in the air, readying the downward plunge into Isaac’s chest, and suddenly God calls out, “Abraham! Abraham! “ God waited until the very last moment to arrest Abraham’s intention.  God is rarely early, and He is never late.  But we must be sure to wait for the timing of God.  

God said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”  When God asked Abraham for the ultimate demonstration of love and obedience, He asked for Abraham’s son. When God the Father wanted to show us the ultimate demonstration of His love for us, He gave us His Son. We can in effect say to the LORD, “Now I know that You love me, seeing You have not withheld Your Son, Your only Son from me.”

1John 4:9-10 says, “By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.  In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.”

So God provided a substitute sacrifice for Isaac. “Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.”  God still required a sacrifice, but He provided a substitute to die in Isaac’s place.  God was showing Abraham how He would one day bless the nations of the world through Abraham’s seed, who was the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.  And I think that God was showing Abraham and us, the terrible cost of such a sacrifice.  We tend to think too lightly of what it took for God to send His Son to the cross than we should.  But Abraham having to slay his own son revealed the reality of the tremendous price of that sacrifice.

Vs14 Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh, The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”  As the scripture says repeatedly, salvation is of the LORD. He is the author and finisher of our salvation. God will provide the means for our salvation, through the substitution of His Son in our place.

Vs 15 Then the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven,  and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son,  indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham lived at Beersheba.

The angel of the LORD s a reference to the pre Incarnate Jesus Messiah.  He who was speaking is the One who would be the substitute provided by God in place of sinners. And because He was able to fulfill that prophecy perfectly, He was able to confirm the prior promises made to Abraham concerning his seed who would bless all the nations of the earth. Jesus swears to the irrevocability of this promise, because He is the One who will carry it out.

The Creation of Man and Woman, Genesis 2:4-25

Last time we looked primarily at the first six days of creation. Now beginning in chapter 2 and vs 4 we see a recapitulation of creation, which I believe is an expanded account of what happened in the six days of creation but also includes what happens in the next week or weeks to come. Moses begins this section by saying in vs 4 “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven.”

A more literal translation might read, “these are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created….” This is the first of ten such designations in Genesis. It’s a formula used often by Moses to add detail that might not yet have been fully presented. Oddly, it seems God says through Moses that these are the offspring of the heavens and the earth.

There is also a different term used for the name of God. In chapter one, it was Elohim, which is in plural form, meaning the Supreme God. Beginning in chapter 2 vs 4 though, He is called Jehovah God, translated, Lord God. In Chapter 1 we are dealing with the making of things, and God is presented to us under the name of Elohim, as the Creator. But when man appears on the scene God is spoken of in a different character. He now appears under His personal name of Jehovah, which means essentially the covenant-making God, the God who keeps a promise. Jehovah is God’s personal name, which indicates His relationship with man.

He also says “in the day” God made the heavens and the earth. I think the usage of that word in this case is not speaking of a single day, but figuratively speaking of the time period when God made the heavens and the earth and all that is in them. I believe there were six literal days as described in chapter 1, and now he speaks of that time period in which God made all that is in the earth.

However, I think that the logical understanding of the sequence indicates some of the events described here take place after the first week. Notice vs 5 “Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. The LORD God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden; and there He placed the man whom He had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”

Some Bible scholars say that this reference to “no shrub on the field was yet in the earth because there was no rain, and there was no man to cultivate the ground” is not a reference to the general plant life of the earth. We know that the plants were created on day three. But what the shrub of the field speaks of is cultivated plants which were specifically for food, such as what God planted in the Garden of Eden.

Last week we looked briefly at the creation of man on day six, and what we have in this account is an expansion of how that occurred. And not only how, but I think this account answers the question “why.” Why was man created? Every thing that God created He spoke into existence. But when God made man, we see something different. God formed man from the dust of the earth. In other acts of creation, God spoke something into existence where there was nothing. But in this case, God forms man out of the dust. Some commentators have pointed out that this word translated as “formed” is used in Jeremiah 18:2 as well as in other places, to describe a potter who would make a jar or vessel from a lump of clay. In the NT, In Eph. 2:10, Paul says we are His workmanship, poema, which speaks of a work of art.

The point I would emphasize is that man was created differently and for a different purpose than all the other creatures that God made. We see God crafting, forming man with His hands, shaping him into His own likeness, in His own image, and then breathing the breath of life into His nostrils. One of the commentators says this has the intimacy of a kiss. And so God crafted man, He breathed into him the breath of life. It’s very much reminiscent of the Lord Jesus Christ’s word to the disciples after the resurrection. He breathed upon them and said, receive the Holy Spirit. And so here we see the distinguishing feature of man. He has
[nešāmâ], the breath that has come from God. And this word nesama is always used in reference to God’s Spirit.

And the text says that man became a living soul. He breathed the breath, the spirit of God into man, and man became a living soul. God made man in His image, in His likeness. And man was made spirit, soul and body. Notice the order in which God made man. The spirit is the part of man that has communion with God, fellowship with God. It is to rule over the soul. The soul of man is made up of his intellect, his emotions and his will. So the spirit is to rule over the soul. And the soul is to rule over the body. The body is to be subject to the soul which is subject to the spirit.

Now that’s the order of God’s creation. But when man sinned, and fell, the order was reversed. God said in the day you eat of it you shall die. What died that day when Adam sinned was his spirit. And so the order of creation was overturned. Man was then ruled by his body, his fleshly lusts, and they ruled over his soul, his intellect, emotions and will. So man became enslaved to his baser passions. At regeneration, at conversion, God reestablishes the divine order of creation by giving life to our spirit, and as we walk by the Spirit, and no longer by the flesh, we renew our minds according to the design of God.

But at creation, man was given the spirit of God, made a living soul, and he was made for fellowship, for life with God. Then next we see what I think is one of the most mysterious things in the creation story. The tree of knowledge of good and evil, and the tree of life which God planted in the garden along with other trees and shrubs that were good for food.

First of all though notice that God planted a garden. This would seem to be a separate act of creation. This seems to have occurred after the six days of creation. God planted a garden that would produce food for man, and He gave man the job of cultivating, or tending the garden. The whole earth was not the garden, nor was the garden necessarily the place where God lives. But it was planted by God and given to man.

But the mysterious thing is that God also planted there the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. I think these are literal trees with real fruit. But they are also symbolic. The tree of knowledge of good and evil is mentioned only here and in vs 17. But the tree of life is referred to many times in scripture, not the least of which is in Revelation chapters 2 and 22. This tree seems to have had the power to convey immortality to man, and as such is used in Scripture as a symbol of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the book of Revelation the tree of life appears as a symbol of the person of Christ. Paul wrote in 2 Tim.1:10 and said of Christ that he “abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.”

But in regards to the other tree, It’s not a tree of good and evil, but the knowledge of good and evil. The fruit of the tree was not inherently sinful. Everything God made was good. I’m sure it was just a normal fruit tree that had good tasting fruit upon it. But the point was that in disobeying God and deciding to eat of that fruit, then the knowledge of evil, the knowledge of sin entered man. There are many theories as to what this means, but the best view I believe is that it indicates moral autonomy. What is forbidden is that man has the power to decide for himself what is good and what is evil. This is a decision that God has not delegated to man, and when man usurps that authority, then he has made himself the arbiter of good and evil, and has put himself in God’s place of authority. It also indicates that sin starts in the mind. It’s the knowledge of good and evil.

Now we read that there wasn’t rain on the earth in those days. Last week we mentioned the firmament or the expanse and the waters being separated above and below so that it would have made a greenhouse effect on the earth. Not only would this canopy of water have blocked out harmful ultraviolet radiation, but it would have likely caused a mist to cover the earth in the morning, and dew on the ground, which would have watered the earth and provided a moderate temperature.

But the Garden of Eden was also placed at the mouth of three rivers, which watered the Garden. You can locate the likely location of the Garden by a map which shows the Tigris and Euphrates River, though the names of the other river have been changed. And perhaps the rivers themselves have been altered in their locations due to the flood. But you can get a general idea from a map that the Garden of Eden would have been in modern day Turkey. And that also gives us assurance of the reality of these events, that they happened as described, and they were in an actual place. This isn’t a fairy tale.

Vs 15 “Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

First of all, God put man in the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. This was Adam’s job. I don’t know that it was a very difficult job, because God planted it, and there were not thorns and thistles at that time. But he was given a job to tend the Garden which provided him food. It also seems that man was a vegetarian at that time. After the flood, God said that man could, or perhaps should eat meat. We aren’t told why, but it may have to do with the canopy of water that had shielded man from harmful ultraviolet radiation was no longer provided, and so man needed the extra nutrients that can come from eating meat. But that is not directly stated in the text.

The first commandment given to man was that he could not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and the punishment for breaking that command was that he would die. It’s interesting that Adam isn’t told that he can’t eat from the tree of life. There seems to be no prohibition in that. In fact, I can’t help but wonder if God wasn’t presenting a choice to man, to eat of the tree of life, which symbolized the immortal life given by Christ, or eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which was to chose to live life according to one’s own standards, which is rebellion against God, which is sin, resulting in death. Seems like an obvious choice, but unfortunately, as we know man was deceived into thinking that he could have a better life if he chose his own version of morality. Man is still confronted with that choice today. To submit to the Lord and have eternal life, or to chose to live according to your version of right and wrong, to live according to the desires of the flesh.

Vs. Then the LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” I believe that the sequence of these events indicates this happened at some time after man was created. I believe when it speaks in chapter one of man being created, male and female He created them, it is referring to Adam being created, in whom was the blueprint for male and female, the male and female chromosomes. God always intended to bring a woman from Adam, but in day six of creation, God made all the hormones and chromosomes of male and female in Adam, but had not yet brought forth Eve from Adam.

But one thing should be clear from this passage, and that is that woman was made to be man’s companion. A helper suitable for him. Like him, corresponding to him. It’s also obvious that for some time, we don’t know how long, man was alone. I find it very hard to imagine all of this happening on day six. I think God wanted Adam to realize that he was alone. And to bring that into focus, God did something interesting before creating woman.

Vs19 “Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought [them] to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him.”

We know that Moses isn’t saying that after Adam was created, God then formed the beasts and cattle and birds. Those were created before Adam was created, according to chapter one. But I think he is just referring to that act of God creating the animals and the birds and so forth in the past, and then bringing them at some point to Adam to name them all. I mentioned last week that scientists say that there are at least 18000 species of birds. Scientists have observed and classified around 1.2 million species of animals, but they estimate that there are approximately 8.7 million living animal species on earth. There are 86400 seconds in a day. So if Adam named one animal per second, then it would take about a hundred days for Adam to name all the animals. That’s if he worked really fast and never stopped to eat or sleep.

The end result though was that Adam did not find any animal or creature that would be suitable for him. I would think he felt more alone after naming all the animals. Now I surmised last time that I believe this was symbolic of something that was a similar experience for God. God looked at all the worlds and creatures that He had created since the beginning, before the earth was formed, and did not find a helper suitable for Himself. And so wanting to have a companion, a helper, God made man. That correlates to the description of the creation of man we looked at earlier when God crafted and formed man out of the dust of the earth with his hands like a potter would shape a vessel, and breathed the breath of His Spirit into his nostrils so that man became a living soul, made in His likeness, in His image.

In Isaiah 54:5 it says “For your husband is your Maker, Whose name is the LORD of hosts; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel, Who is called the God of all the earth.” Man was made to be the bride of Christ. Your husband is your Creator.

So because man could find none among the animal kingdom to be a suitable helper for him, vs. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”

It seems that some pastors in the past have concluded that because of this act of creation man has one less ribs than women. Of course that’s not true, and the Bible doesn’t teach that. That’s akin to God making a man with 10 fingers and if he lost one in an accident, then his child would be born with 9 fingers.

But irregardless, God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep, took a rib from him and closed up the flesh. Then the Lord fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man. All the raw material for woman was already made in Adam, God just used part of Adam to make woman. That still is a miracle of creation that we cannot really comprehend. I’m not sure Adam could comprehend it any better. But his first words recorded in scripture are “this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” Adam recognized that she was a part of him. And I think that to this day man feels like something is missing in his life until he finds that woman who completes him. I remember my own dad telling me when I was single, that when I found a wife she would complete me. And I think that’s true.

Some have suggested that bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh is a covenantal statement similar to the marriage vow, “in weakness and in strength.” Saying that circumstances will not alter the loyalty and commitment to one another. And just as Adam named all the animals and creatures, so he names her Woman, for she came out of man. The word for woman in Hebrew is Issa, which also means wife. So from the Biblical rendering of the word wife it can only be used for a woman.

And in Vs24 we see that marriage commitment further delineated. “For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” Marriage is what is being spoken of here, a man and his wife form the marriage bond. Marriage is the joining together so that they are one. Woman was made to be the companion, helper to man, and thus be his wife. And together they become one flesh. There is solidarity in this relationship as they are joined together as man and wife.

Jesus quotes from this verse in order to confirm the sanctity of marriage. In Matt. 19:4 Jesus said, “Have you not read that He who created [them] from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’? “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

Ephesians 6 tells us that the husband and wife relationship speaks to the relationship of Christ and the church. The church of course not being an institution, but a people, conformed to the image of Christ, made in HIs likeness. These people are the bride of Christ, taken from the wound from His side. Eph 5:28-33 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also [does] the church, because we are members of His body. FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH. This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must [see to it] that she respects her husband.”

Finally, Moses tells us in vs25 “And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” In the marriage relationship there is no sin. That is what I think is being indicated here. Outside of marriage sexual relations are sinful. But in a marriage relationship there is no sin. And in our relationship with Christ there is no sin. Our sin is not counted against us when we are in Christ. But outside of Christ we remain in our sins.

I trust that you are in Christ today. That you have accepted Him as your Savior and Lord, believing in Him, submitting to Him as your Lord and Master. Forsaking all others, clinging only to Him.
